The 2018 Formula 1 World Championship was the 69th season of the Formula 1 World Championship . It began on March 25th in Melbourne, Australia and ended on November 25th on Yas Island off Abu Dhabi . Lewis Hamilton became world driver champion for the fifth time. Mercedes won the Constructors' World Championship for the fifth time in a row .
Changes 2018
Racetracks
For the first time since 2008 , the French Grand Prix was included in the racing calendar. After the race took place in Magny-Cours from 1991 to 2008 , it has now been held again in Le Castellet , where it was last driven in 1990 . The German Grand Prix also returned. It was last held at the Hockenheimring in 2016 and also took place there in 2018.
In contrast, the Malaysian Grand Prix , which had been part of the racing calendar every year since 1999 , was omitted . Although the race organizer had a contract with the Formula One Group that was valid until 2018 , the latter decided to end this contract a year earlier for financial reasons.
Technical regulations
For the 2018 season, the Halo system was introduced in the Formula 1 World Championship to increase driver safety . The introduction of the Halo system increased the minimum weight from 728 to 733 kg.
For each wheel there had to be three instead of two Kevlar cables with which the wheel was attached to the chassis. The fastening points are now also prescribed more precisely, and the wheel nuts must be better secured.
In order to prevent the addition of oil to the gasoline, the fill level of the main oil tank was monitored, and the teams had to transmit this to the FIA in real time .
The conspicuous fins on the engine cover have been banned. Most teams wanted to stick to the fin, however, because the start numbers that were enlarged during the previous season were placed there, which take up space elsewhere on the vehicle for potential team sponsors. This proposal, for the implementation of which would have required a unanimous decision in the strategy group, was rejected by McLaren .
The additional wings at the end of the engine cover and the monkey seat above the tailpipes were also banned .
Steering movements were now only allowed to change the ground clearance on the front axle by a maximum of five millimeters. In the previous season, teams designed the vehicles in such a way that they significantly reduced the ground clearance during steering movements and thus generated more downforce .
Sporting regulations
For the 2018 season, the FIA specified the rules for early start detection, for which a technical system is used. Drivers who position their vehicle in such a way that this system cannot record it are now also punished. The trigger for this was Sebastian Vettel , who at the 2017 Chinese Grand Prix was offset by around one meter from his actual starting position. This prevented its start from being detected by the system.
In addition, current vehicles may also be used outside of racing weekends at events organized by the owner of the commercial rights of the Formula 1 World Championship ( Formula One Management ). In 2017, before the Grand Prix of Great Britain, a demo drive took place in London , where most of the teams used vehicles from the 2015 Formula 1 World Championship . Haas did not take part due to the lack of a corresponding vehicle, the team had only entered the Formula 1 World Championship in the 2016 season . Even Force India did not have a production ready vehicle older construction.
The number of drive unit components allowed per season has been further reduced. In the 2017 season, four copies of all components were allowed to be used per season. With MGU-K , energy storage and control electronics, the number allowed for the season drops to two, with combustion engine, turbocharger and MGU-H to three.
The introduction of the Halo system will adjust the time in which a driver must be able to leave his vehicle in an emergency. This became necessary because the Halo system hindered drivers getting in and out. Instead of the previous five seconds, the drivers now have seven seconds, and it is now twelve instead of ten seconds before the steering wheel is attached to the steering column .
In addition, the conditions that a test driver must meet in order to participate in the free practice of a Grand Prix are changing. He must now have contested at least six races in the FIA Formula 2 championship or have scored at least 25 points in the past three years according to the current FIA point system for granting the super license . Drivers who have already had a super license must have achieved a whole season in the FIA Formula 2 championship or 25 points in the past three years.
The start times of the races will change for the 2018 season. Instead of 2 p.m. local time, the start is usually postponed to 3:10 p.m. local time. Those responsible stated that the reason was that it promised that, especially in the summer months, more television viewers in Europe would tune in in the late afternoon. In addition, the TV stations, whose transmission begins on the hour, would be given time for a ten-minute preliminary report instead of starting the transmission directly at the start of the introductory round.
Engine suppliers
The Sauber team, which had contested the preseason with Ferrari engines in line with the 2016 season, announced in April 2017 that they would start with Honda engines from the 2018 season . Frédéric Vasseur , who had replaced team boss Monisha Kaltenborn in July 2017, wanted to rethink the planned cooperation with Honda, as the Honda engines were considered the weakest and most unreliable in the field. A few days later, Sauber announced that it would not start with Honda engines in 2018. The next day the team announced that they would contest the 2018 season with Ferrari engines of the current expansion stage.
Toro Rosso contested the season with engines from Honda , while McLaren competed with Renault engines.
driver
Felipe Massa ended his career in the Formula 1 World Championship after 15 years. His successor at Williams was Sergei Sirotkin , who made his debut in the Formula 1 World Championship.
Charles Leclerc also made his debut at Sauber in the Formula 1 World Championship. He succeeded Pascal Wehrlein , who became a test and reserve driver at Mercedes .
Teams
After Force India filed for bankruptcy on July 27, 2018 , a few days later a group of investors led by Lawrence Stroll took over the majority of the team. The team started at the Belgian Grand Prix with a new name as Racing Point Force India . Since the team was not acting as the direct legal successor to the old team, it was a new designer who also lost all claims to prize money that the team had earned. In a vote among the teams of the Formula 1 World Championship, the necessary unanimity was achieved, so that the team was entitled to the prize money from Force India. In return, Force India must remain part of the team name.
tires
Uniform tire supplier Pirelli was very conservative when developing the tires for the 2017 Formula 1 World Championship. For example, the hardest tire compound P Zero Hard was used for the first time at the Spanish Grand Prix in 2017 . It was sorted out by all drivers after a few laps in free practice. Because of their degree of hardness, the tires did not reach the required temperature and were therefore labeled as unusable. Pirelli responded to the criticism and stopped using the Hard tire compound in the 2017 season. For the 2018 season, Pirelli announced that it would make all tire compounds one level softer and introduce the 2017 P Zero Soft tire as P Zero Medium in 2018 . Before the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2017 , Pirelli presented the tires for the 2018 season, with the P Zero Superhard (orange) and the P Zero Hypersoft (pink) there were two new tire compounds . The previously orange-marked Hard tire compound was now marked in ice blue. Pirelli responded to criticism from the drivers that on some tracks such as the Circuit de Monaco even the ultrasoft compound was too hard. However, the drivers still only had three different tire compounds available on each race weekend.

Season preparation
February 26–1. March: Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya
The first week of testing took place from February 26th to March 1st at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain.
All ten new cars made their track debuts in this test. At the start of the test on February 26th, Daniel Ricciardo in the Red Bull was fastest with a lap time of 1: 20.179 minutes ahead of Mercedes drivers Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Räikkönen in the Ferrari . Ricciardo was more than 1.5 seconds faster than Lewis Hamilton's best time on the first day of testing last year (1: 21.765 minutes). The drivers stated that the new asphalt alone allowed lap times to be around two seconds faster. After it was still dry in the morning, it rained in the course of the afternoon. Ricciardo also covered the greatest distance with 105 laps, followed by Brendon Hartley in the Toro Rosso with 93 laps and Raikkonen with 80 laps. At Renault , Nico Hülkenberg and Carlos Sainz Jr. alternated . off, together they drove 99 laps. Nikita Masepin covered the shortest distance in the Force India , because of braking problems he only drove 22 laps.
On February 27th, Sebastian Vettel set the fastest time in 1: 19.673 minutes ahead of Valtteri Bottas and Stoffel Vandoorne in the McLaren . After it was dry for the first few hours, there was no driving in the late afternoon due to light snowfall. Vettel also drove the greatest distance, covering 98 laps. Bottas followed with 94 laps and Pierre Gasly with 82 laps. At Williams , Robert Kubica and Sergei Sirotkin took turns , they drove 100 laps together. The fewest laps were driven by Haas drivers Kevin Magnussen (36) and Vandoorne (37), who both only covered a little more than half a race distance. An extension of the test drives by one day sought by McLaren based on the weather forecast for the coming day was rejected in a vote. All ten teams should have agreed to this.
The third day of the first week of testing on February 28th was canceled for almost all teams due to heavy snowfall and temperatures below freezing point. Only Fernando Alonso drove a few timed laps, but with a best time of 2: 18.545 minutes he was 59 seconds short of the fastest lap time of the previous day. With eleven laps he drove more than all the other drivers put together. Besides him, only Marcus Ericsson took to the track in the Sauber , Hartley, Kubica and Ricciardo for a maximum of two installation laps each. This test day sparked discussions about holding winter test drives in Europe. Relocation to warmer areas, for example to the Bahrain International Circuit , was ruled out by various responsible persons for financial and logistical reasons.
On March 1st, when the weather was much better, Hamilton was fastest with a lap time of 1: 19.333 minutes ahead of Vandoorne and Vettel. Gasly drove the longest distance with 147 laps, followed by Vettel with 120 and Vandoorne with 110 laps. Since Vandoorne took turns with Alonso, McLaren was the team with the most kilometers covered with a total of 161 laps. Max Verstappen had to abort the test prematurely after a spin and thus only got 35 laps.
6-9 March: Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya
The second week of testing also took place from March 6th to 9th at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain.
On March 6th, Vettel was fastest with a lap time of 1: 20.396 minutes ahead of Bottas and Verstappen. Vettel also covered the longest distance by far with 171 laps, followed by Verstappen with 130 and Ericsson with 120 laps. At Mercedes, Bottas and Hamilton alternated again, both doing 177 laps together. Hülkenberg and Sainz also took turns at the wheel of the Renault and drove 139 laps. Vandoorne drove the shortest distance, only completing 38 laps. Gasly also drove less than a race distance with 54 laps.
Ricciardo was fastest on March 7th in 1: 18.047 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Bottas. Ricciardo also drove the longest distance with 165 laps, followed by Charles Leclerc with 160 and Esteban Ocon with 130 laps. At Renault, Hülkenberg and Sainz alternated again, both doing 190 laps together. Bottas and Hamilton also took turns at the wheel of the Mercedes and drove 175 laps together. McLaren again drove the shortest distance, on that day with Alonso at the wheel, who drove 57 laps.
On March 8th, Vettel was fastest with a lap time of 1: 17.182 minutes ahead of Magnussen and Gasly. This was the fastest lap time ever recorded on this variant of the circuit. Vettel also drove the greatest distance, with 188 laps he covered almost three Grand Prix distances, followed by Verstappen with 187 and Gasly with 169 laps. Williams, where Kubica and Stroll took turns, drove the fewest laps with 140 laps. This also corresponded to more than two Grand Prix distances.
At the end of the test on March 9th, Raikkonen set the fastest time in 1: 17.221 minutes ahead of Alonso and Sainz. Grosjean covered the greatest distance with 181 laps, followed by Ocon with 163 laps and Raikkonen with 157 laps. The Sauber team drove the shortest distance with 75 laps.
Racing calendar
The provisional racing calendar, which includes 21 races, was approved by the FIA World Council on June 19, 2017. This was then confirmed by the same committee at the beginning of December.
