The 2010 Formula 1 World Championship was the 61st season of the Formula 1 World Championship . It was held over 19 races from March 14th to November 14th.
In the last race, Sebastian Vettel was able to secure the drivers' world championship, the constructor's title went to his Red Bull Racing team . Vettel became the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history to date.
“The 2010 Formula 1 season saw spectacular ideas; instead of boring optimization of details, progress was not in the hundredths range, half a second was gained. The model year was marked by the F-shaft , flutter wing and blown diffuser ”. Despite cost containment, McLaren alone commissioned 173 tech projects over the season and Williams was 2 seconds faster by the end of the season.
Changes in 2010
Racetracks
A total of 19 races were held in the 2010 season. The Korean Grand Prix at the Korean International Circuit was new . The Canadian Grand Prix returned to the calendar after a year off. The German Grand Prix switched from the Nürburgring to the Hockenheimring according to the annual rotation .
Regulations
The minimum weight of the racing cars has been increased from 605 to 620 kg. In addition, the FIA and FOTA discussed further cost-cutting measures after the original budget limit of 45 million euros was lifted. The general test ban during the season remained in place. Six days of straight-ahead test drives were still allowed. Each of these days, the teams could swap for four hours in the wind tunnel.
tank
This season refueling ( allowed since 1994 ) during the race was forbidden, but was allowed until before the race, thus also in the last third of the qualification. The tank capacity increased from approx. 140 to 230 liters per racing car.
tires
The following tire types were available for each driver and race: eleven sets of slicks , four sets of intermediate and three sets of rain tires . There were four mixtures for the slick type: supersoft, soft, medium and hard. Each driver had to drive two different tire compounds per race (supersoft / medium or soft / hard). Bridgestone determined which compounds were available for which course. The width of the front tires for slicks has been reduced by the manufacturer Bridgestone from 270 to 245 millimeters for better balance. The originally planned abolition of the tire warmers was dropped due to safety concerns on the part of the teams.
Engine and KERS
In addition, the frozen engine regulations have been relaxed in order to be able to adjust the performance between the manufacturers by making modifications to the units. KERS was still officially allowed by the FIA, but the teams that formed part of FOTA had made a voluntary waiver and did not use KERS.
Qualifying
The qualifying mode has been changed slightly due to the field of drivers having grown to 24 vehicles. The seven slowest drivers were eliminated in the first two stages, the subsequent finale of the ten fastest drivers remained unchanged. However, the top ten drivers had to start the race with the tire set with which they had set the fastest lap in qualifying.
Point system
Due to the increased number of drivers, a new points system was introduced. The new point scheme was now: 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1. This graduation also applied to the constructors' championship and other FIA world championships.
Teams
After Honda withdrew from Formula 1 at the end of the 2008 season , the FIA decided to counter possible further withdrawal plans by the manufacturers with a budget ceiling - now voluntarily agreed - and thereby open the starting field for new teams who have not yet been able to afford Formula 1 could. As a result, all established manufacturing teams, above all Ferrari, threatened to found an alternative monoposto racing series because they saw the free competitive spirit of the sport in danger. Regardless of the dispute between the parties, numerous interested parties left their applications to participate in the 2010 season with the FIA. On June 12, 2009, an official entry list for the next season was finally published, which initially listed three new teams: Campos (later HRT ), Manor (later Virgin ) and US F1 . US F1 withdrew from the start on March 2, 2010 and was banned from all FIA competitions indefinitely by the FIA in June 2010 for not participating. Due to the withdrawal of BMW (see below), another place was later given to the Malaysian prospect Lotus . All new teams competed with Cosworth engines, so the British engine manufacturer returned to Formula 1 after a three-year break. Even Williams familiar from 2010 to Cosworth engines.
The BMW AG said on July 29th 2009, to retire at the end of the 2009 season completely out of F1. On September 15, 2009, the automobile manufacturer announced that Qadbak Investments Ltd., initially referred to as "a foundation based in Switzerland" to have reached an agreement on the sale of the BMW Sauber F1 Team . A few days later, Qadbak Investments Ltd., which is actually a company registered in the Virgin Islands and which had already caused a sensation with the purchase of the English football club Notts County , came across the lack of clarity about the origin of the money and one of the authorized representatives of Qadbak Investments Ltd. served jail sentence for insurance fraud in the negative headlines. On November 27, 2009, BMW finally announced that the team would not be sold to Qadbak Investments after all. Instead, it was bought back by its founder Peter Sauber (BMW took over Sauber Motorsport on January 1, 2006 ). The sale was, however, subject to the condition that the FIA allocate the team the starting place vacated by Toyota's withdrawal. On December 3, 2009 the starting place for the Sauber team was confirmed. Motors were supplied to the team by Ferrari.
After the end of the season, Toyota also announced that its works team had left Formula 1.
The Brawn GP team , which started out in 2009 and emerged from the former Honda Racing F1 Team , was majority taken over by Mercedes-Benz in November 2009 and took part in the world championship under the name Mercedes Grand Prix as the works team of the German automobile manufacturer . In the course of the takeover of Brawn GP, Daimler AG sold back its shares in the McLaren Group . The McLaren team continued to receive engines until 2014 and in 2010 still competed in the Silver Arrow design.
In December 2009, Renault initially sold 75 percent of the team shares in the Renault F1 Team to the Luxembourg company Genii Capital and withdrew from the operational business of the racing team. Genii Capital later took over the racing team completely.

Team changes and comebacks
The reigning world champion Jenson Button switched from Brawn to McLaren and replaced Heikki Kovalainen , who switched to Lotus. Button's previous teammate at Brawn, Rubens Barrichello , started for Williams in 2010. Record world champion Michael Schumacher returned to Formula 1 after a three-year break and competed for the Mercedes team that had emerged from the Brawn GP. His teammate was Nico Rosberg , who had left Williams. The Mercedes works team started with a purely German driver pairing. Fernando Alonso , under contract with Renault in 2009, took over the cockpit from Kimi Räikkönen at Ferrari. Alonso, in turn, was replaced at Renault by Robert Kubica , who had previously driven for BMW Sauber. Jarno Trulli , who joined Toyota in 2009, has now started for Lotus. His previous team-mate Timo Glock drove for Virgin in 2010. The Sauber team signed the Japanese Kamui Kobayashi , who had already stood in for the injured Timo Glock at Toyota in the last two races of the season in 2009. As his team mate, long-time McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa returned to the grid as the second regular driver at Sauber. He was replaced in September by Nick Heidfeld , who was active as a test driver for Mercedes and Pirelli up to this point. During the season, Sakon Yamamoto and Christian Klien also returned to Formula 1 and took over a cockpit at HRT in individual races.
New drivers
Williams signed the 2009 GP2 series champion , Nico Hulkenberg , for 2010 . Renault signed the current GP2 runner-up, Vitaly Petrov . The GP2 runners-up from 2007 and 2008 also moved into the starting field of Formula 1: Lucas di Grassi signed with Virgin, Bruno Senna (nephew of Ayrton Senna ) with HRT (formerly Campos). Karun Chandhok also made his Formula 1 debut for HRT.
No longer in the starting field
Kimi Raikkonen left Ferrari and went in 2010 in the World Rally Championship at the start. Giancarlo Fisichella , who was under contract with Force India in 2009 and later replaced the injured Felipe Massa at Ferrari, stayed with the Italians but ended his Grand Prix career and worked as a test driver that year. Nelson Piquet Jr. , who was fired from Renault in mid-2009, competed in the American NASCAR - Camping World Truck Series in 2010 . His successor Romain Grosjean did not receive a new contract from Renault either and competed in the new FIA GT1 World Championship , the GP2 series and the Auto GP , which he won in 2010 . Sébastien Bourdais , dismissed by Toro Rosso after the German Grand Prix the previous year , was also not among the Formula 1 drivers of the 2010 season. In 2010 he started in the Superleague Formula . Williams split after three years from Kazuki Nakajima , who did not start in any racing series in 2010.
Others
The tire manufacturer and F1 sole supplier Bridgestone announced its withdrawal from Formula 1 as the third Japanese company after Honda and Toyota within a year. However, the company fulfilled its contract with the FIA, which ran until the end of 2010. Since the 2011 Formula 1 season, all tires have been supplied by Pirelli .
For the first time in Formula 1 history, all teams wanted to present their vehicles for the new season together. The presentation should take place at the end of January at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo near Valencia . However, due to a conflict of interest, it had to be canceled again.
Teams and drivers
The starting field for the 2010 season published by the FIA on March 3, 2010 comprised twelve teams.

The Australian Grand Prix at the Albert Park Circuit took place on March 28, 2010 and covered a distance of 58 laps of 5.303 km, which corresponds to a total distance of 307.574 km.
The race took place under changing weather conditions and started on a wet track. All teams chose intermediates for their drivers. Jenson Button was the first to decide to switch to dry tires and, after initial difficulties, benefited from the strategy.
Sebastian Vettel, who had achieved pole position, still led the race after switching to dry tires and was able to regularly increase his lead. As in Bahrain, despite the good performance, he did not manage to clinch victory, as the front left wheel nut had loosened on lap 25 and he remained standing in the gravel trap after the Ascari curve.
Button, who was in second place at the time, took advantage of this and won his first race since the 2009 Turkish Grand Prix , which was also his first win for McLaren-Mercedes. Robert Kubica stood on the podium for Renault for the first time in second ahead of Felipe Massa.
In contrast to the previous Grand Prix in Bahrain, the race on the Albert Park Circuit was characterized by numerous overtaking maneuvers and different strategies.

As in the Spanish Grand Prix , Mark Webber also scored a start-to-finish victory in this race. With Sebastian Vettel in second place, it was a double victory for Red Bull-Renault . Robert Kubica came in third.
There were four safety car phases in total. The last safety car phase took place at the end of the race after Jarno Trulli and Karun Chandhok collided . On the last lap of the race, shortly after the pit entrance, Michael Schumacher overtook sixth-placed Fernando Alonso immediately after the safety car had turned into the pit lane. The race stewards punished Schumacher for this after the race with a time penalty of 20 seconds, which meant that the German fell back to twelfth place.
As usual for Monaco, the race was predominantly characterized by tactical decisions and overtaking maneuvers were rare, except in the start phase. After starting out of the pit lane, Alonso finished the race in sixth place with a clever strategy and a few overtaking maneuvers.
In the World Championship, Webber took the lead in front of his team-mate Vettel with the same number of points, and his Red Bull-Renault team also took the World Championship lead after the one-two.
