The Brawn BGP 001 was the Formula 1 racing car of the Brawn GP Formula One Team in the 2009 season . Three of these were built and used with drivers Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello . The monoposto , originally developed by Honda Racing F1 under the designation Honda RA109 , was characterized by a clear competitive advantage in the first half of the season: It was equipped with a so-called double diffuser , which provided a time advantage of three to five tenths of a second per race lap.

The Brit Button was world champion with the car , the Brazilian Barrichello finished third at the end of the season. In addition, the Brawn team won the Constructors ' World Championship , as the first Formula 1 team in its first year of existence. Button and Barrichello won a total of eight out of seventeen races. The racing team achieved a double victory in four races.

Development and test drives

The Brawn BGP 001 was developed as the Honda RA109 in Brackley from April 2008 and was the first Honda racing car to be developed under the direction of team boss Ross Brawn . The shape of the car was designed by three aerodynamic teams - Ross Brawn integrated the chief aerodynamicist of the dissolved Super Aguri F1 racing team, Ben Wood, into his team - with the help of four wind tunnels; a total of 450 employees worked on vehicle development. The lead designers were Jörg Zander as technical director and Loïc Bigois as aerodynamicist . The construction had exactly the dimensions of the previous model: 470 cm long, 180 cm wide and 95 cm high.

When the Honda team realized that the drivers were unable to take the top positions with the Honda RA108 , the racing car of the 2008 season , they focused on developing the racing car for the 2009 season from the middle of the season After Honda announced its withdrawal from Formula 1 on December 5, 2008, the Honda RA109 was developed further in order to be able to offer a buyer a finished vehicle. Finally, Ross Brawn's management bought the team itself on March 3, 2009 and renamed it Brawn GP . Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello again formed the driver duo.

Barrichello in Brawn BGP 001 during test drives on March 10th at the Circuit de Catalunya

On March 6th, 2009, Button introduced the Brawn BGP 001 at the Silverstone Circuit in Great Britain. He drove the car on the Stowe Circuit , which is inside the Bridge Grand Prix Circuit . While the other teams had already completed several test drives, Brawn only got on for the test drives from March 9th to 12th at the Circuit de Catalunya north of Barcelona . With the exception of Toro Rosso and Brawn, all teams had already had several days of testing with the new racing cars. The two Brawn pilots took turns daily. On the third day of the test, Button achieved his first best time with more than a second advantage over second placed Felipe Massa in a Ferrari F60 . One day later, Barrichello set the best lap time of this test week with a time of 1: 18.926 minutes ahead of Nico Rosberg in the Williams FW31 with 1: 19.774 minutes.

In the next week, during the test runs on the Circuito de Jerez from March 15 to 17, the team continued the form of the first week of testing. On the first day Barrichello set the fastest lap time with a lead of six tenths of a second, ahead of Fernando Alonso in the Renault R29 . On the second day, Alonso set the fastest time ahead of Barrichello. On the third day of testing, the last one before the season, Button took the lead with the fastest time of the three days of testing.

After the first day of testing at the Circuit de Catalunya, the potential of the Brawn BGP 001 was discussed in the paddock. Ross Brawn denied that the fast lap times were achieved with little fuel. After the first test drives near Barcelona, the competitors expressed astonishment at the lap times that were possible with the Brawn BGP 001. The technical director of Williams , Sam Michael , even expressed the fear that Button and Barrichello would win the first Grand Prix with more than one lap. Ferrari driver Massa assessed the situation as follows: “We are competitive - but only in the league behind Brawn.” Jenson Button described the confidence that the good results of the test drives triggered in the team as follows: “The data showed us early on that we hit the bull's eye. Even when we were still fighting to save the team, we knew that we had a winning car. "

technology

Monocoque and wheel carrier

As with other Formula 1 vehicles, the construction consisted of a monocoque basic structure weighing approx. 45 kg made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic . The chassis, engine and wing assemblies were attached to this. The attachment for the front wing was the crumple zone in order to pass the standards of the prescribed crash tests . The wheelbase was 3180 mm, the front track 1470 mm and the rear 1405 mm. The wheel suspensions, double wishbones on the front and rear wheels, were made of titanium and carbon fiber reinforced plastic. Ie not on the wheel, but in the monocoque - - Pressure rods and toggle (so-called "pushrods") on the inside were lying spring and damper units from Sachs operated. Active wheel suspensions were forbidden. While Button completed the entire season with just one chassis, Barrichello changed the chassis for the Singapore Grand Prix .

aerodynamics

The double diffuser of the Brawn BGP 001

For the 2009 season, the rules regarding the wings were changed significantly. The width of the front wing has been increased to 180 cm (instead of 140 cm), and the maximum width of the rear wing has been reduced to 75 cm (instead of 100 cm). At the same time, the rear wing had to be installed higher (95 cm instead of 80 cm above the road) and the front wing lower (5 cm instead of 15 cm minimum distance from the road). The regulations for the diffuser have also been revised. The diffuser, a tail unit starting 350 mm after the rear axle and rising to a maximum of 175 mm vehicle height at the end of the underbody, increases the suction effect under the racing car and thus creates a suction effect. Up to now it has contributed around 40% of the downforce to a Formula 1 racing car. With these technical changes, the air turbulence for vehicles behind should be reduced and thus overtaking maneuvers should be made easier.

The special aerodynamic feature of the Brawn BGP 001 was the double diffuser with central channel. The double diffuser, first attached to the Brawn BGP 001 as well as to the Williams FW31 and the Toyota TF109 in the 2009 season, reinforced the suction effect with a second, shorter plate above the actual diffuser. The double diffuser of the BGP 001 also had a central channel that was not visible from below, which, compared to simple diffusers, produced higher downforce and therefore more traction.

Before the first race in Australia, the Ferrari , BMW Sauber , Renault and Red Bull teams protested against the double diffusers installed on the Brawn BGP 001, the Williams FW31 and the Toyota TF109. The responsible race stewards rejected the protest and declared the diffusers to be compliant with the rules. In the appeal proceedings on April 15, 2009 the FIA Sports Court finally declared the double diffusers to be admissible. The double diffuser is prohibited from the 2011 season .

At the end of November, Loïc Bigois received the Dino Toso Racecar Aerodynamicist of the Year Award , an award for the best aerodynamicist in Formula 1.

engine

The Brawn GP 001 used a FO108W engine from Mercedes-Benz HighPerformanceEngines that weighs at least 95 kg according to the FIA regulations and was made available via a delivery contract. Therefore, there were no Mercedes stickers on the racing car. According to the regulations for the 2009 season, there was a self-priming 2.4-liter V-type engine with eight cylinders (90 ° bank angle, 98 mm bore ) with speed limiting to 18,000 min -1 (revolutions per minute). The estimated consumption was 75 l / 100 km of premium gasoline (maximum 102 RON ) with an equally estimated output of 755  hp . In the first version, the vehicle's construction was adapted to a Honda engine. Due to the conversion to the Mercedes-Benz engine, the transmission had to be set 6 mm higher; the rear suspension travel got too short. An additional oil cooler shifted the center of gravity upwards. The purchase agreement with Mercedes-Benz was concluded after the takeover by Brawn. Alternatively, it would have been possible to buy the engine from Ferrari .

transmission

The semi-automatic transmission, hydraulically controlled without interruption of tractive power, was developed by Honda. In accordance with the regulations, it had seven sequentially shifted forward gears with 30 possible gear ratios as well as one reverse gear and was shifted with two paddles on the steering wheel.

electronics

The engine control , which among other things was responsible for the speed limitation, as well as electronic components including the software were, according to the regulations of the FIA, supplied by McLaren Electronic Systems in cooperation with Microsoft to all Formula 1 teams equally. Electronic traction help and traction control were thus excluded.

KERS

Brawn GP did not use KERS . The system for the recovery of kinetic energy was approved according to the regulations for the 2009 season and enabled an increase in output of up to 60  kW (approx. 82 hp) for 6.67 seconds per lap. Brawn decided against using the system because, on the one hand, it would have required an adaptation of the vehicle and, on the other hand, the KERS weight of 35 kg would have made the vehicle heavier than the minimum weight of 605 kg. The team no longer had access to the KERS developed by Honda, as it was the intellectual property of the Honda group.

Brakes

According to the regulations, two independent brake circuits were required for the front and rear wheels; an anti-lock braking system was prohibited. The brake calipers with radially mounted six-piston calipers and brake discs made of carbon ceramic were supplied by the Italian company Brembo (Button) and the German-American company Hitco (Barrichello). The weight of a brake disc was approx. 1.5 kg, the optimal operating temperature was between 400 ° C and 750 ° C. The Brawn BGP 001 had the rear brake calipers on the bottom, with small lamellae on the inside, which provided additional downforce.

Tires and wheels

Tires with slicks were approved again for the season after they had not been allowed since 1998 . This increased the mechanical grip of the tires by 10% and the vehicles achieved higher cornering speeds. The maximum cornering force changed due to the slicks from 6 ° to 5 ° slip angle ; thus the border area became narrower. The tires in size 270/55 R13 at the front and 325/45 R13 at the rear (operating pressure 1.2–1.5 bar) in three specifications (dry, intermediate, wet) were provided by the Japanese manufacturer Bridgestone for all teams. The one-piece wheels made of forged magnesium with central locking were supplied by BBS motor vehicle technology .

Advertising and painting

The Brawn BGP 001 was painted entirely in white except for yellow and black stripes around the "nose". During the first race in Australia, the vehicle only had a logo of the tire manufacturer Bridgestone in addition to the Brawn GP logo. In the course of the season, Brawn concluded further sponsorship deals, so that more logos were added. The first of these new logos belonged to the British clothing manufacturer Henri Lloyd, followed shortly after by the Virgin Group as the team's main sponsor. The Swiss broker company MIG Investments was the next big sponsor and received an advertising space on the front of the vehicle from the Chinese Grand Prix. From the Grand Prix of Great Britain, the British watch manufacturer Graham-London advertised BGP 001 on the side mirrors of the Brawn. In addition, as part of the partnership, the watch manufacturer presented two exclusive watches with the suffix “BGP-001”.

At the Singapore Grand Prix, the Japanese electronics manufacturer Canon advertised the Brawn racing car once

In addition to the permanent sponsors, Brawn GP concluded sponsorship contracts for individual races: At the Spanish Grand Prix, the vehicle bore the logo and an image for the film Terminator Salvation on the side of the rear wing. At the Singapore Grand Prix, the Japanese camera manufacturer Canon returned to Formula 1 with advertising stickers on the side panels of the Brawn BGP 001. At the Japanese Grand Prix, the Japanese cosmetics group Angfa promoted the Scalp-D hair care range .

At Barrichello's home race in Brazil, there was a contract with the Brazilian brewery Cervejaria Petrópolis . The beverage manufacturer advertised its Itaipava beer brand and its own energy drink TNT on the Grand Prix weekend . At the season finale in Abu Dhabi, the Qatari telecommunications group Qtel advertised on the rear wings and side pods of the racing cars.

A 2010 research by Formula Money found that Brawn sponsors had the best advertising scores. In the top positions, nine Brawn sponsors were in the lead. Cervejaria Petrópolis achieved the greatest return on investment with the beer brand Itaipava with a value of 853%.

Formula 1 season 2009

Technical regulations

The minimum weight including the driver was 605 kg, the maximum vehicle weight with one full tank for the first stint (until refueling) was around 665 kg. Each driver had a total of eight engines and one gearbox for four consecutive events for the entire season. If this rule was exceeded, the starting grid was put back by ten or five places. In addition, 3–8 monocoque chassis were built for each team, the number of which was not limited. For each race weekend, each driver had fourteen sets of slick tires, five sets of intermediates and four sets of rain tires available. Bridgestone offered the slick tires in four different compounds: "supersoft / soft" and "medium / hard". Two different mixtures had to be used by each driver per race.

Course of the season

The Brawn BGP 001 won a total of eight races in the 2009 season, four of which were double victories. The Brawn BGP 001 was characterized by a reliability that was superior to the other teams. During the season, the team achieved 32 finishings and 97.2% of all race laps to be completed. Two races were not finished, one because of a technical defect in the gearbox, the other because of a collision.

Six wins from the first seven races

Button won his last race of the season in Turkey

At the season opener, the Australian Grand Prix , the Brawn drivers dominated qualifying . The two racing drivers took first places in each of the three sections. Finally, Button secured the first pole position of the season ahead of his team-mate Barrichello . Button won the race with a start-to-finish victory over Barrichello, who was almost eliminated in a starting collision at the beginning. The last time the factory team managed Mercedes in the Formula 1 1954 season , a double victory in the first race.

In the second race of the season, the Malaysian Grand Prix , Button started again from pole position. The race was canceled due to bad weather. Button won the race, achieved the fastest lap and thus achieved his first hat trick in Formula 1. Since less than 75% of the laps had been completed, all drivers received only half of the regular points.

After Button had finished third at the Chinese Grand Prix , he won the following four races. In Spain and Monaco there were also two more double victories. It was the first time that three Formula 1 races had been won in a row with a single engine. At the Turkish Grand Prix , Barrichello retired with a gearbox failure. It was the first failure of a Brawn BGP 001.

In the constructors' championship, Brawn-Mercedes led after the first seven races with 96 to 56.5 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault. Button had a clear lead with 61 points ahead of Barrichello (35 points) and Sebastian Vettel (29 points) and won six of seven races. As the season progressed, Button didn't score another win.

Won the world title despite weaker races

At the next three Grand Prix, Barrichello’s third place in the UK was Brawn’s only podium finish. The loss of a feather on Barrichello's car in qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix also made headlines . The lost spring then jumped over the track, hit Felipe Massa on the head and caused a serious accident. Massa drove unchecked into the tire wall, had to go to the hospital for treatment and was out the rest of the season. In the race, Brawn achieved the worst result of the season to date with seventh place for Button and tenth place for Barrichello. During this phase of the season, both drivers repeatedly had problems getting their tires to the right temperature. Therefore, some of them even had to warm up their tires by zigzag driving during the races.

After the summer break, Barrichello scored his first victory in the Brawn BGP 001 at the European Grand Prix . After the McLaren drivers had determined the qualifying and started the race from first and second, Barrichello, who started from third, decided with a good strategy and bad luck of his competitors the race for themselves. His overtaking maneuvers always took place at the pit stop. It was Barrichello's first win since the 2004 Chinese Grand Prix .

In the fourth Brawn GP one-two in Italy, Barrichello won ahead of Button

At the next Grand Prix in Belgium Button fell out for the first time after a collision with Romain Grosjean . With a seventh place for Barrichello, the weekend at Spa-Francorchamps was the worst for the Brawn BGP 001. One race later, at the last European race in Italy , Brawn scored the fourth double victory of the season with a one-stop strategy. Barrichello won the race ahead of Button. The Monza win was the final win for Brawn BGP 001.

At the Asian races in Singapore and Japan , the opposing teams managed to further reduce Brawn's point advantage. With 20 points still to be awarded, Button had a lead of 14 points over Barrichello and 16 points over Vettel. In the constructors' championship, Brawn-Mercedes was leading by 35.5 points over Red Bull-Renault.

At the Brazilian Grand Prix , Button finally won his first world title. Barrichello achieved pole position in a chaotic qualifying, which with a duration of 161 minutes was the longest in Formula 1 history, while Button finished 14th and Vettel 16th. In the race, Barrichello had the typical bad luck for him at his home race: After a puncture, he only finished eighth. Button, however, showed a few overtaking maneuvers and improved to fifth place. His lead over all other pilots was so great that he became world champion early. Brawn-Mercedes also won the constructors' world championship ahead of Red Bull-Renault.

The duel for second place in the drivers' world championship was finally decided at the season finale in Abu Dhabi . Vettel won the race and was runner-up in front of Barrichello. In this race, Button was also on the podium in third for the ninth time of the season.

In the second half of the season, Brawn was unable to repeat the dominant performances from the first seven races. There were many reasons for this: The other teams upgraded significantly during the season and adopted striking features of the Brawn BGP 001, such as the double diffuser. In addition, Brawn had significant problems with the tires in the second half of the season, including getting the front tires up to temperature and graining . Since the Brawn BGP 001 tended to understeer and the correct balance of the vehicle was designed for slower routes, the understeer increased on faster routes.

Stay after the season

At the Young Driver Days from December 1st to 3rd, 2009 on the Circuito de Jerez, the Brawn BGP 001 drove for the last time in a pure Formula 1 event, as pilots with little experience in Formula 1 cars on three test days to lead. Brawn used Mike Conway , a British IndyCar Series driver, and Marcus Ericsson , a Swedish racing driver who won the Japanese Formula 3 Championship in 2009 , for the tests . Both drivers shared the racing car on every test day. Conway was always the faster Brawn pilot.

Between the end of the 2008 season and the beginning of the 2009 season, the team had manufactured 4 chassis. The first two chassis should serve the planned Honda RA109. After Honda withdrew from Formula 1 and sold the team to Brawn, these chassis were never made into racing cars. The chassis were similar to those of the later Brawn BGP001, but showed significant differences in the rear area. The integration of the Mercedes engine required a differently shaped oil tank than the Honda engine, which meant that 2 new monocoques were manufactured. Another was completed as a replacement.

The chassis BGP001-01 was driven by Rubens Barrichello. It was in use until qualifying for the Singapore Grand Prix when Barrichello had an accident and the chassis was damaged. The car is now owned by Jenson Button, who had a contract stipulated before the season that he would receive the car he drove or a similar type in the event of a victory in the world championship. This bolide is not roadworthy.

The BGP001-02 chassis was driven by Jenson Button. It was used in all races of the 2009 season. That bolide is owned by Ross Brawn. The car was shown several years later at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2016, 2018 and 2019. As part of the festival, Ross Brawn stated that the biggest problem with repairing the car was finding compatible older laptops to load and start the car's control software.

The chassis BGP001-03 was driven by Rubens Barrichello from the Singapore Grand Prix. After the team was sold to Daimler AG at the end of the season , it was renamed the Mercedes Grand Prix . Since the successor model of the Brawn BGP 001, the Mercedes MGP W01 , was not yet completed at the Mercedes Grand Prix team presentation , the repainted Brawn BGP001-03 was shown to the public. Mercedes also showed the car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2011.

Remarks

  1. Although the Mercedes factory team was able to celebrate winning the drivers' world championship with Juan Manuel Fangio as a newcomer in 1954 , the racing driver did not compete exclusively for Mercedes during the season. The constructors' championship was only introduced in 1958 .
