The 1986 Formula 1 World Championship was the 37th season of the Formula 1 World Championship . It was held over 16 races between March 23 and October 26, 1986. Alain Prost won the drivers' world championship for the second time. Williams was the third time constructor world champion.
Changes in 1986
Regulations
For the first time, only engines with a turbocharger and a maximum displacement of 1.5 l were permitted . The 1986 season was the only year of the first "turbo era" in which only vehicles with turbo engines started in each race. For this, however, the amount of petrol carried was limited to a maximum of 195 liters.
Racetracks
The Spanish Grand Prix returned to the racing calendar for the first time since 1981 and was held for the first time on the new Circuito de Jerez . Also on the program again was the Mexican Grand Prix , which had previously been part of the Formula 1 World Championship in 1970. As in that year, the venue was again the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City . Completely new, however, was the Hungarian Grand Prix, held for the first time in 1986 at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród - a sensation during the Cold War .
In return, the South African Grand Prix , which had already been boycotted by some teams in protest against apartheid last year , and the Dutch Grand Prix were canceled . A European Grand Prix , which had been held on the British Brands Hatch circuit the previous year , also no longer took place in 1986. Instead of the Silverstone Circuit , this racetrack was the regular venue for the Grand Prix of Great Britain in 1986 . The German Grand Prix also moved back to Hockenheim after a one-time return in 1985 to the new Nürburgring .
In addition, some race dates were postponed: The Portuguese Grand Prix , which took place in bad weather conditions last year, was moved from April to September. In return, the Belgian Grand Prix moved into early summer.
Teams
The only new team in the field towards the end of the year was the French racing team Automobiles Gonfaronnaises Sportives (AGS), who assembled their vehicles with the help of material that the Renault works team , which had not started again after the previous year , had given them. In addition, the name Benetton appeared in the starter lists for the first time, but this racing team emerged from the takeover of the Toleman team. On the other hand, RAM Racing and Alfa Romeo did not compete again alongside Renault . Spirit, on the other hand, had already given up after three races in the 1985 season.
Engines
Unlike its predecessor team, Benetton no longer competed with Hart engines, but received the tried and tested BMW M12 / 13 engine. In addition, the new Cosworth GBA engine made its debut at Team Haas in the course of the season , also known as the Ford TEC after support from Ford . However, there were no further changes at the engine suppliers. However, despite generous support from Renault, AGS did not use a Renault engine, but rather engines from Motori Moderni .
tires
As before, the tire suppliers were Goodyear and Pirelli , but there were no changes in the teams. AGS, as a new participant, used Goodyear tires.
Technical innovation
The unusually flat Brabham BT55 caused a sensation, the design of which was achieved by rotating the entire engine block by 75 ° on its side. This arrangement should achieve a trouble-free flow to the rear wing and thus combine maximum downforce with minimum air resistance. However, the driving behavior was problematic and the engine cooling was inadequate, so that the vehicle was largely unsuccessful. However, an evolution of this concept is occasionally seen in the 1988 McLaren MP4 / 4 .
driver
At McLaren , Niki Lauda ended his career in 1985, he was replaced by Keke Rosberg , the 1982 world champion, who came from Williams . There was Nelson Piquet one of former world champion again contracted and new team-mate Nigel Mansell . Piquet, in turn, came from Brabham , where his place was taken by Elio de Angelis . De Angelis came from Lotus , which signed Johnny Dumfries at the request of its UK main sponsor . Brabham also completed his driver duo with Riccardo Patrese , who came from the disbanded Alfa Romeo works team, and thus completely repositioned himself.
Benetton took over from the previous team, Toleman Teo Fabi , and Gerhard Berger from Arrows was the second driver . Marc Surer came to Arrows for Berger , who had finished the previous year at Brabham. There was also a driver change at Tyrrell , who took over the French Philippe Streiff , who had started at Ligier the previous year . There, in turn, René Arnoux , who had been dismissed after the first race of the preseason at Ferrari and was replaced by Stefan Johansson . Ferrari itself, on the other hand, was the only team that had the same line-up compared to the end of the 1985 season.
The teams Zakspeed , Minardi and Team Haas, all of which had made their debut in the previous year with only one vehicle each, increased their participation in the race to two vehicles each. At Zakspeed, the former Osella driver Huub Rothengatter was used, whose place at Osella was taken by Christian Danner of all people, who had already contested two races for Zakspeed last year instead of the regular driver Jonathan Palmer . Minardi repositioned itself completely and brought the experienced Andrea de Cesaris on the one hand and the newcomer Alessandro Nannini on the other. Team Haas, on the other hand, relied alongside Alan Jones on the experienced Patrick Tambay , who had even won races for Ferrari and Renault in previous years.
During the season itself there were several permanent changes, some of which were due to tragic accidents. Marc Surer was seriously injured in a rally accident, whereupon Christian Danner switched to Arrows and his cockpit at Osella was instead taken over by Canadian debutant Allen Berg . Ligier driver Jacques Laffite broke both legs in a starting accident at the Grand Prix of Great Britain and was then replaced by his compatriot Philippe Alliot , who had not found a new cockpit after the RAM team had left. Finally, after Brabham driver Elio de Angelis was killed in an accident during testing killed, returned to him Derek Warwick in Formula 1 back, who had gone last year for Renault and after the withdrawal of the team instead, first in the World Cup sports cars to had started.
