The 1986 Spanish Grand Prix took place in Jerez de la Frontera on April 13th and was the second race of the 1986 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

For the first time since 1981 a race for the Formula 1 World Championship took place in Spain. The then newly built Circuito Permanente de Jerez in the south of the country was chosen as the venue .

Exactly the same drivers and teams competed that had completed the season opener in Brazil three weeks earlier .

training

The training results resulted in the same first three starting positions as in Brazil, namely Ayrton Senna on pole position in front of the two Williams drivers Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell . This was followed by the two McLaren teammates Alain Prost and Keke Rosberg in front of René Arnoux in sixth.

run

While Senna and Piquet were initially able to defend their positions, Mansell fell behind Rosberg during the first lap and behind Prost a short time later. Between the 18th and 39th laps, however, he was able to gradually overtake all the opponents in front of him and take the lead.

Ten laps before the end of the race, Senna regained the lead. During the maneuver, Mansell had to take it easy to avoid a collision and not to stray from the track. As a result, Prost, from whom the two duelists had never been able to clearly distance themselves for the lead, also managed to get past Mansell to second place. Mansell then headed for the pit to have new tires fitted. He came back on track around 20 seconds behind. Within a few laps he caught up with the leading duo again. On the fourth to last lap he overtook Prost. On the last lap he caught up with Senna and in some parts of the track he was right next to him, including on the home straight. Senna crossed it with a lead of just 0.014 seconds, making the race result one of the tightest in Formula 1 history.

Alain Prost took third place ahead of Keke Rosberg, Teo Fabi and Gerhard Berger .
