Reports
background
In the two months between the South African Grand Prix and the third round of the World Cup in Spain, three Formula 1 races that were not part of the World Championship took place. Brabham driver Carlos Reutemann secured victory at the Brazilian Grand Prix , which in 1972 did not yet have World Cup status. The other two races, held in Great Britain, were won by Emerson Fittipaldi for Lotus , at Brands Hatch and Silverstone . For the professional world it was clear that Lotus would take a leading role again this year after a comparatively weak season in 1971 . With Tyrrell and Ferrari , however, two well-known Formula 1 racing teams had decided not to take part in all three events, which may have simplified the success for Lotus.
The entry list for the Spanish GP showed only a few significant changes to the previous World Championship races. Carlos Reutemann had to take a break due to an injury and was represented at Brabham by Emerson Fittipaldi's older brother Wilson Fittipaldi , who thus made his Formula 1 debut. It was the first time in the history of Formula 1 that two brothers took part in a race at the same time.
Àlex Soler-Roig completed his last Grand Prix participation this weekend.
training
Jacky Ickx secured pole position with a lead of 75 hundredths of a second by being the only driver this weekend with a lap time of under 1:19 min. drove. In addition to him, Denis Hulme and Emerson Fittipaldi qualified for the first row, which consists of three different vehicles. In the second row stood Jackie Stewart and Mario Andretti .
Mike Beuttler failed to qualify in a privately entered March 721G .
run
The weather on race day was cool and unstable. Hulme took the lead, followed by Stewart and Clay Regazzoni , who made a strong start from eighth on the grid. Jacky Ickx and Emerson Fittipaldi moved in behind them. The latter had problems during the first laps, as gasoline spilled into his cockpit due to a leak and the automatic fire extinguisher was then started. Amazingly, however, this did not change the Brazilian’s competitiveness.
After just a few laps, Hulme had problems with his transmission and had to let Stewart, Ickx and Fittipaldi pass, who had just passed Regazzoni. Ickx made a mistake in the over-eager overtaking maneuver, so that Fittipaldi passed him and finally took the lead three laps later by also overtaking Stewart.
Hulme and Stewart both had to give up in promising positions towards the end of the race. Hulme because of a technical defect, Stewart because of his own fault by turning off the track and damaging his car at a barrier.
In addition to the three podium places, the good performances of fourth-placed Surtees driver Andrea de Adamich and Carlos Pace , who already received a World Championship point in his second Grand Prix , were particularly noticeable.
