Ruy Cinatti

Ruy Cinatti Vaz Monteiro Gomes (born March 8, 1915 in London , † October 12, 1986 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese poet, anthropologist and agronomist. In his work as a poet he devoted himself to São Tomé and Príncipe and East Timor .

Career

Cinatti's parents were Portuguese but had ancestors from Italy and Macau . He spent his childhood in Lisbon , where he began writing poetry as a teenager. His role models were Jules Verne , Wenceslau de Morães , Robert Louis Stevenson and Alain Gerbault . Cinatti studied at the Instituto Militar dos Pupilos do Exército and the Instituto Superior de Agronomia in Lisbon, where he graduated as an agricultural engineer. He chose the profession specifically in order to be able to work outside of Portugal. In 1940 he co-founded the Os Cadernos de Poesia association . From 1942 to 1944 he was co-editor of Revista magazine .

On June 27, 1946, he reached Portuguese Timor , where he worked for the colonial government. Cinatti became Secretary to Governor Óscar Ruas . One of the first things he did after arriving in Timor was to visit the grave of his idol Alain Gerbault, who had died in Dili in 1941 . Alongside his work, Cinatti wrote books on the country's botany and other poetry. In 1948 he returned to Portugal, but was again in Portuguese Timor from 1951 to 1955 as head of the agriculture department. Back in Europe, Cinatti studied social anthropology at Oxford University . In 1958 he was back in Portuguese Timor and studied the local architecture and traditions until 1962. He made friends with the rulers of Ai-Assa and Lore , who also enabled him to see sacred objects that were otherwise hidden. In 1966 Cinatti was in Timor for the last time.
