The 1929 Spanish Grand Prix was a 12-hour race for sports cars on Sunday, July 28, 1929 at the Circuito Lasarte in San Sebastián .

The race had in previous years, the title of Grand Prix Guipúzcoa , and was part of the 7th major automotive meetings in San Sebastián, which on Thursday, July 25, with a race for Grand Prix cars, the San Sebastián Grand Prix opens has been.

Before the race

The Spanish Royal Automobile Club Real Automóvil Club de España organized the 7th large automobile meeting at the Circuito Lasarte at the end of July 1929.

1929 was a year of transition for the Grand Prix scene, the season for Grand Prix vehicles advertised by the world association AIACR consisted of only 2 races and the world championship was "only" for sports cars.

The Spanish Grand Prix started on July 28, 1929 at 11 a.m. and lasted for 12 hours, i.e. into the night. Accordingly, the reliability of the so-called "private sports car" and the quality of the lighting system were decisive. In Spain there was a fuel monopoly in 1929, which is why standard petrol was used.

The race

After the first lap, Louis Chiron crossed the finish line in seventh place, in the second already in third and already took the lead on the third lap, closely followed by Edmond Bourlier also on Bugatti . Then came the Alfa Romeo and Lancia vehicles . After a good start, Roger Bourcier had to turn off his Tracta . Achille Varzi later also retired in an Alfa Romeo, but (as was customary at the time) was able to finish the Spanish Grand Prix in the other Alfa Romeo racing cars still in the race.

After 16 laps, 8 vehicles had already retired, so only 13 left on the track. At the time the three Been Rally of Anne-Cécile Rose Itier , Baligand and Morán failed, also a Lancia, an Alfa Romeo, the Stutz of Oscar Leblanc , the Tracta of Bourcier and Ariès of Arthur Duray .

During the pit stop on lap 32, Joaquín Palacio's Bugatti caught fire. Palacio was able to save himself from the vehicle with burning clothes and was burned. The Bugatti could be extinguished quickly enough and Moreno drove on with the vehicle.

Chiron was still the leader on lap 60, but the Alfa Romeo, driven alternately by Rigal, Varzi and Zehender, was only 17 km behind. Chiron pitted on lap 61, but the pit stop lasted a full quarter of an hour. This was enough for the Alfa Romeo team to catch up almost completely. On the last lap, the Bugatti's headlights suddenly went out. Chiron has to stop and Rigal takes the lead at that moment and Alfa-Romeo wins the race.
