Reports
background
On the weekend after the Portuguese Grand Prix, the 14th World Championship round of the year took place in Spain with the same driver line-up.
training
As is so often the case this season, Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost formed the front row . Nigel Mansell shared the second row with Thierry Boutsen . Behind them followed Alessandro Nannini and Ivan Capelli . After a dangerous maneuver against Julian Bailey that resulted in an accident for the Briton, Riccardo Patrese , who placed seventh, was fined.
run
While Prost took the lead, Senna fell back to third place behind Mansell. This seemed to hold up the Brazilian noticeably at first, so that Prost was able to gain a lead.
Confused by false reports on his fuel gauge, Senna slowed down, allowing Capelli and Patrese to catch up. Capelli passed him on lap 36, but retired shortly afterwards due to technical problems. In the meantime, Nannini had overtaken his compatriot Patrese and on lap 48 passed Senna into third place.
Alain Prost won ahead of Nigel Mansell, Alessandro Nannini, Ayrton Senna, Riccardo Patrese and Gerhard Berger . Due to the rule of struck off results at the time, Prost did not receive the usual nine, but only three points for his victory and thus just as many as his World Cup competitor Senna for fourth place.
