Maurício Gugelmin (born April 20, 1963 in Joinville ) is a former Brazilian racing driver and Formula 1 driver .

Career

Early years

Gugelmin, who comes from a wealthy family, started karting at the age of twelve. At the age of 17 he switched to formula racing and drove in the Brazilian Formula Fiat . In 1980 he moved to Europe because he expected better chances of a successful formula career there. While racing in the British Formula Ford 1600, he lived in the same house in Egham , Surrey with his compatriot and later friend Ayrton Senna . In 1985, like Senna, Gugelmin won the British Formula 3 Championship two years earlier . Senna then tried to get Gugelmin to join Lotus in Formula 1, but this failed due to the sponsors' approval. Gugelmin therefore switched to the International Formula 3000 Championship with his Formula 3 racing team West Surrey Racing , but there was no success there.

formula 1

For the 1988 season , the Brazilian got a Formula 1 cockpit at March , where he started alongside Ivan Capelli . He drove a total of 32 races for the British team, which was taken over by its Japanese main sponsor Leyton House and renamed in late 1989 . During this time, a third place at his home Grand Prix 1989 in Brazil was Gugelmin's greatest success. That should not change during 1990 and 1991 either. With Leyton House he reached the points only once, at the Belgian Grand Prix in 1990, with a sixth place.

In his final season, Gugelmin started for Jordan in 1992 . A seventh place at the San Marino Grand Prix was his best result, he did not score any World Championship points. Gugelmin recorded a total of ten World Championship points at 74 Grand Prix and once set the fastest race lap at the French Grand Prix in 1989 .

Champ Car

After the Brazilian did not want to be successful in Formula 1, he switched to the American IndyCar series in 1993, some of which later became part of the Champ Car series. There he drove a total of 147 races until 2001, of which he was able to win one. In 1997, with this victory, he finished fourth overall.
