The Sochi Autodrom ( Russian Сочи Автодром / Sotschi Awtodrom), called Sochi International Street Circuit during the planning phase , is a motor racing circuit in the Russian city of Sochi . On 12 October 2014, the first found there Grand Prix of Russia of Formula 1 instead.
history
In 2014, the track was on the Formula 1 calendar for the first time. Until the official Formula 1 calendar was announced in December 2013, there were repeated rumors that the track premiere could be postponed to 2015 due to the Olympic Games taking place in the same year. For this reason, the architects' office was asked not to include this racetrack in the projects listed on its homepage, where it was not yet listed at the end of March 2014. During the scheduled construction pause due to the Olympics from December 2013 to April 2014, it was said that 91% of the work had been completed. The route was completed in August 2014 and approved by the FIA on August 19, 2014, and the route license issued. The contract runs until 2020.
The Sochi Autodrom was designed by the German route planner Hermann Tilke . After another racetrack near Moscow was planned, which was not realized for financial reasons, the choice fell on Sochi as the location.
Data
At 260 million euros, the construction of the line cost significantly more than the originally estimated 142 million euros. The circuit was integrated into the Olympic Park, which was negotiated in a direct conversation between Bernie Ecclestone and Vladimir Putin .
The clockwise route is 5.853 km long. The premiere race took place on October 12, 2014, although storms and heavy rains were to be expected there at this time of the year. However, the first race was the best autumn weather. Lewis Hamilton won the premiere ahead of his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg and the Williams driver Valtteri Bottas .
