Reports
background
A strike by truck drivers caused traffic problems throughout France in the run-up to the eighth World Cup. With the exception of Andrea Moda Formula , all Formula 1 teams were on site in time for the first training session.
training
Due to the lack of Andrea Moda, the maximum number of 30 training participants was present, so a pre-qualification was not necessary.
After a collision with Gerhard Berger, Érik Comas survived the subsequent violent impact in a boundary wall unharmed. In rainy weather, Christian Fittipaldi and Michele Alboreto collided during the course of training .
For the seventh time on the eighth race weekend of the year, Nigel Mansell , who was by far the leader in the world championship rankings, qualified for pole position. His Williams team- mate Riccardo Patrese followed in second place in front of Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger, who share the second row in their McLaren MP4 / 7A . Michael Schumacher and Jean Alesi formed the third row in front of their respective teammates Martin Brundle and Ivan Capelli .
run
In wet track conditions, Patrese took the lead from Mansell. As a result of a driving error, Schumacher collided with Senna at the end of the back straight, who was then eliminated. Several other collisions occurred in the midfield. Patrese finished the first lap as the leader ahead of Mansell, Berger, Brundle and Alesi. Mika Häkkinen followed ahead of Thierry Boutsen , Éric Comas and Johnny Herbert .
After ten laps, Berger retired due to an engine failure. Shortly afterwards it started to rain. By the 18th lap the weather conditions deteriorated to such an extent that the race was interrupted with the red flag.
A restart was performed after a heavy shower ended. Patrese was able to defend his top position at first, but was overtaken by Mansell at the end of the back straight. The Italian immediately countered successfully, but at the end of the lap he finally let his teammate pass according to the stable order .
When it started to rain again, most of the pilots, who were at the top of the group at the time, headed for the pits to have rain tires fitted. Alesi initially tried to continue the race on slicks in order to save the time of the pit stop. This brought him up to second place in the meantime. After eight laps, however, he had to realize that this strategy did not promise lasting success and also had his tires changed. A little later he had to give up due to an engine failure.
Mansell won ahead of Patrese, Brundle, Häkkinen, Comas and Herbert. For Williams this was already the fifth double victory of the year. Brundle stood on the podium for the first time in his career.
