Reports
background
Despite a strike by French truck drivers and the associated traffic problems on the roads, all teams arrived in Great Britain on the weekend after the French Grand Prix in time for the ninth World Championship round of the year.
Christian Fittipaldi had to take a break due to an injury and was represented at Minardi by Alessandro Zanardi .
training
In contrast to the French GP, a pre-qualification took place again, as the entry list again comprised 32 drivers due to the return of the Andrea Moda Formula team , of whom only 30 were allowed to participate in the regular training.
With a lap time that was almost two seconds shorter, Nigel Mansell secured his eighth pole position of the season ahead of his Williams team- mate Riccardo Patrese . Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher shared the second row in front of their respective teammates Gerhard Berger and Martin Brundle . Johnny Herbert followed before Jean Alesi , Mika Häkkinen and Érik Comas .
Damon Hill succeeded for the first time to qualify for a Formula 1 race.
run
Häkkinen missed the warm-up on the morning of the race day because he was stuck in a traffic jam caused by the large numbers of spectators arriving on the comparatively narrow access roads to the race track.
In the first corner Patrese took the lead in front of his team-mate Mansell, who was clearly the leader in the world championship standings. However, he immediately countered successfully, set himself apart from the rest of the field and scored another dominant victory. Patrese added another double victory to Williams. Since Martin Brundle finished third, the same line-up as the weekend before in France was on the podium.
Senna, who dueled Brundle for third place over several laps, was eliminated seven laps before the end of the race due to a gearbox failure. Engine problems on Berger's McLaren MP4 / 7A led to an exchange between Berger and Schumacher on the penultimate lap, who finished fourth. Häkkinen received the last World Cup point of the day in sixth place.
