The 1963 British Grand Prix took place on July 20, 1963 at the Silverstone Circuit near Silverstone and was the fifth race of the 1963 World Automobile Championship .

Reports

background

The Great Britain Grand Prix took place at the Aintree Circuit in previous years and returned to the Silverstone Circuit after 1960 . From that year the venue changed annually with Brands Hatch , this change was completed until 1987 , before Silverstone became the permanent venue for the Grand Prix.

Due to the injury breaks of Willy Mairesse and Ludovico Scarfiotti , Ferrari only had one driver available and for this reason, as in the 1962 British Grand Prix, only registered one car for the race. BRM decided not to use the new BRM P61 ; both Graham Hill and Richie Ginther drove the older BRM P57 . ATS paused for another race, Scirocco-Powell drove with two drivers for the first time. In addition to Tony Settember , Ian Burgess drove the second vehicle and contested his first race of the season.

In the teams with private vehicles, Mike Hailwood made his debut in the automobile world championship. Before that he rode like John Surtees in the motorcycle world championship and was a multiple world champion. Hailwood was registered for Reg Parnell Racing alongside Chris Amon and Masten Gregory and drove a Lotus 24 . Ian Raby also contested his first race in the automobile world championship, he drove a Gilby 62 . This was the final race for a Gilby Engineering car . Bob Anderson also made his debut , driving a Lola Mk4 for DW Racing Enterprises .

With Jim Clark and Jack Brabham , two former winners took part in the race, Ferrari has already been successful seven times and Cooper twice with the designers . In the drivers' championship, Clark was well ahead of the competition after winning three of the first four races of the season. In the constructors' championship, Lotus led by a large margin over Cooper and BRM

training

For the third time in a row and for the fourth time in the season, Clark achieved pole position . In contrast to the previous races, this time he only had a narrow lead over the runner-up, Dan Gurney on Brabham . His teammate and team principal Brabham qualified for fourth place behind Graham Hill. Surtees followed in front of the two factory co-operatives of Bruce McLaren and Tony Maggs . The best driver with a customer vehicle was Lorenzo Bandini , who drove a BRM P57 for Scuderia Centro Sud and qualified him for eighth place. Ginther and Trevor Taylor completed the first ten.

The designers Scirocco, Gilby and Lola Cars and Porsche took positions in the back field and were not competitive.

run

At the start, Clark lost four positions and dropped to fifth. Brabham took the lead from his team-mate Gurney, which for the first time since the Monaco Grand Prix had led a driver other than Clark four races before a Grand Prix. McLaren and Graham Hill were third and fourth after the start. However, Clark was again the fastest driver in the field and within just four laps he overtook all of his competitors in front of him and took the lead. He then continuously expanded his lead.

McLaren retired on lap six with engine failure, so Graham Hill moved up to fourth place. Gurney overtook Brabham in a duel for second place, shortly afterwards Brabham also retired with engine failure. The two Scirocco and Ireland on BRP were also canceled in the early stages of the race. All three cars were caused by an ignition problem. Clark profited from the failures of the competition and increased his lead to more than a minute when Gurney had an engine failure on his Brabham and retired. Graham Hill and John Surtees previously dueled for third place and overtook each other several times. Graham Hill went out as the winner of this duel and as a new runner-up he came closer to Clark. Six laps before the end of the race, he was only 36 seconds behind the leader.

In the rear field, Raby, Jo Bonnier and Jo Siffert retired in the last third of the race with technical defects. Graham Hill ran out of gas on the last lap of the race and coasted, but still reached the finish line in third place. This enabled Surtees to overtake him and finish the Grand Prix in second place. He also drove the fastest race lap, his second of the season. Clark won the fourth race in a row and further extended his lead in the drivers' standings. It was his second of four consecutive victories at the British Grand Prix. One lap behind, Ginther crossed the finish line in fourth place, while Bandini finished fifth in the points. Hall scored the first point of his career for position six. Chris Amon again just missed the points, placing seventh ahead of Hailwood, Maggs and Beaufort.

In the drivers' standings, Clark was 22 points ahead of Ginther, who improved by one place in this standings. Graham Hill and John Surtees were 23 points behind Clark, finishing third and fourth. Lotus’s lead increased to 19 points in the constructors’ championship, BRM was the new runner-up and Cooper fell back to third. All drivers and teams still had theoretical chances for the respective titles.
