Ian Burgess (born July 6, 1930 in London , † May 19, 2012 in London ) was a British racing driver .

Career

Ian Burgess caused some excitement in motorsport in 1951 when, completely surprisingly, he won the class up to 500 cc in the Eifel race at the Nürburgring . In the pouring rain, the then unknown Burgess left established drivers like Ken Wharton and Peter Whitehead behind. However, he could not build on this success and the next few years were without further success.

The tide didn't turn until Burgess started working for Cooper in the mid-1950s . He became an instructor at the Cooper Racing Driver School at Brands Hatch and drove the Formula 2 Cooperative test drives .

In 1957 he stepped up his racing activities and finished fourth in the Gold Cup at Oulton Park . In 1958 he drove a full Formula 2 season for the British Atkins team. Victories in Crystal Palace and Snetterton followed fourth places in Montlhéry and Reims . However, a serious accident at the AVUS in Berlin ended the season prematurely.

In 1959 he was back on the race track and drove for the Scuderia Centro Sud in Formula 1 . Burgess had already made his debut in the highest single posto class the year before. At the Grand Prix of Great Britain , he went with a plant - Cooper T45 at the start, but retired with a broken clutch out. The Scuderia Centro Sud also used a Cooper. However, their T51 was not powered by a Climax unit , but by a Maserati engine. The best placement of the year was the sixth place at the German Grand Prix at AVUS. There were no World Championship points for this placement, only the first five received points for the World Championship ranking.

In 1960 , Burgess was also involved with the Italian racing team in Formula 1 before he switched to Camoradi Racing in 1961 and drove their Lotus 18 . After a brief stint with the Anglo-American Equipe, Burgess contested the last two of his 16 world championship races in 1963 for the US Scirocco team. As in the 14 races before that, Burgess remained without World Championship points in his last Formula 1 appearances.
