Ian Raby (born September 22, 1921 in Woolwich , † November 7, 1967 in Lambeth ) was a British automobile racing driver .

Career

The used car dealer Raby contested its first car races in Formula 3 in the 1950s . The attempts to walk were not really successful, it was only with the purchase of a Cooper in 1956 that the tide turned. Raby was able to achieve some victories and until 1958 he drove in addition to Formula 3 also sports car races.

He focused the early 1960s fully on the single-seater Trek. After two seasons in the Formula Junior to Raby in 1962 bought a discarded Gilby to 1963 in the World Cup car to get in. He finished third at the Gran Premio di Roma and made his debut in the World Cup at the British Grand Prix .

In 1964 the Gilby was replaced by a Brabham BT3 , with which Raby contested two more Grand Prix races.

1966 Raby moved with a Brabham BT14 in the Formula 2 . He finished fifth in the Eifel race before a serious accident at Brands Hatch ended the season prematurely. In 1967, already 46 years old, he returned to Formula 2 to take part in the first European Championship. During the race in Zandvoort on July 30, 1967, he had another serious accident. Raby was rescued alive from the wreck, but died a few months later from his serious injuries.
