Anthony Frank "Tony" Settember (born July 10, 1926 in Manila , Philippines ; † May 4, 2014 in Reno , Nevada ) was an American racing car driver .

Career

Before the Californian came to Europe, he drove a Corvette and a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL sports car race in the USA. In Italy he won the Naples Grand Prix on a Maserati in the late 1950s .

For the 1962 season , Settember persuaded his wealthy friend Hugh Powell to invest money in the British Emeryson team to compete in Formula 1 . The Emeryson with the 4-cylinder Climax engine was a simple racing car, but Settember and his teammate John Campbell-Jones had problems setting the car up properly.

Settember made his debut in the automobile world championship at the 1962 British Grand Prix . Four laps behind the winner Jim Clark in the Lotus 25 , he finished eleventh. The team soon quarreled and the team was disbanded before the end of the season.

Powell and Settember reorganized themselves and started in 1963 as the Scirocco Powell Racing Cars team. The new chassis was developed by Hugh-Jones Aiden based on the construction of Paul Emery built when driving a used V8 engine of BRM The car was not competitive. Settember had no chance in the world championship, only at the Austrian Grand Prix, which was not part of the world championship , he was able to finish second.

At the end of the season, Powell also retired and Settember turned his back on Europe to work in the USA on the continuation of his career. He was racing sports cars again; first with a Lotus 23 , later with a Lotus 30 and an AC Cobra . At the beginning of the 1970s he entered the CanAm series with a Lola T70 , but only rarely achieved success and soon retired from racing.
