The 500 km race in Zeltweg , also known as the Grand Prix of Austria (500 km race for sports cars), Zeltweg , was held on September 11, 1966 at Zeltweg Airport . It was the 13th and final race of the sports car world championship this year.

The race

In 1957 there was a motorsport event for the first time on the grounds of the military airport in Zeltweg, Styria . Motorcycle , sports car and, from 1959, monopostor races were held on a racing weekend . In 1963 the monopostor race received the status of a Grand Prix of Austria and was advertised for Formula 2 cars . Jack Brabham won the race on a Brabham BT3 . In 1964 , the Grand Prix of the Formula 1 Automobile World Championship ended with Lorenzo Bandini's victory in the factory - Ferrari 156 Aero . In 1965 , the main race of the Grand Prix was a sports car race, which Jochen Rindt won in a Ferrari 250LM .

In 1966 the distance was 500 kilometers, which corresponded to a racing time of just under 3 hours. The Appreciation won Gerhard Mitter and Hans Herrmann on a plant - Porsche 906 before moving alone teammates Jo Siffert . At the finish the duo had a lead of 5.5 seconds over Siffert. Third placed Udo Schütz and Herbert Linge were already three laps behind.
