Robert "Bob" Bondurant (born April 27, 1933 in Evanston ) is a former American automobile racing driver .
Career
Bob Bondurant began his motorsport career as a teenager . He competed in dirt track motorcycle races in the early 1950s and switched to automobile racing in 1956 . A used Morgan was his first racing car. His breakthrough came in 1963. After winning the West Coast Production Car Championship in 1963 in a Chevrolet Corvette , Carroll Shelby noticed him. Shelby, always on the lookout for talented young people, gave him a work contract.
Bondurant competed four times in the Le Mans 24-hour race . When he first participated in 1964 , he achieved his best result. Together with Dan Gurney on an AC Cobra , he finished fourth in the overall standings and won the large GT class up to 5000 cubic centimeters. In 1965 he was again part of the Shelby driver team and had a share in winning the World Sports Car Championship . In Le Mans , however, he started for Rob Walker . The Ford GT 40 , which he shared with Umberto Maglioli , retired after 29 laps with engine failure.
In the same year he also made his first appearance in Formula 1. Luigi Chinetti gave him a Ferrari cockpit and Bondurant made his debut as a replacement for John Surtees at the US Grand Prix , which he finished in ninth place.
A successful Formula 1 career seemed possible when he achieved his first world championship points with fourth place at the Monaco Grand Prix . His driving style predestined him more for the long sports car races than for the short grands prix. He was known as a reliable pilot who handled the material carefully and was able to maintain his pace over long distances. What he lacked was the basic speed that distinguishes Grand Prix drivers. His Formula 1 career ended in 1966 after just nine races.
He continued to successfully drive sports car races and switched to the CanAm series in 1967 . A serious accident ended the season prematurely for him. Bondurant withdrew from active racing and founded a racing school.
In 1971 he made a comeback as a racing driver, drove CanAm races again and took part in five NASCAR events. Always involved in Riverside , his best place in the most popular US racing series was 18th overall.
It was at this late stage in his career that he achieved the best placement in the 12-hour race at Sebring , which he finished third overall with Gary Belcher and Bob Garretson in 1979 .
In 2003 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of US Motorsports.
