Mugello 6-hour race in 1978
The Mugello 6-hour race in 1978 , also known as the 6-hour Mugello race , took place on March 19 at the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello . The race was the third round of the sports car world championship this year.
The race
After three races in North America, the 6-hour race at Mugello in 1978 was the first race in Europe. Two of these three races counted towards the long-distance rider rating, which was provisionally introduced in 1978 and thus brought some North American races a world championship status. The event in Mugello was the second of the Manufacturers' World Championship in 1978. The season began at the beginning of February with the Daytona 24-hour race and the victory of Rolf Stommelen , Toine Hezemans and Peter Gregg in the Brumos Porsche 935/77 . Another overall Porsche victory followed, which was achieved by Brian Redman , Charles Mendez and Bob Garretson in the Sebring 12-hour race . In April, Peter Gregg and Brad Frisselle won on the Talladega high-speed track .
The fastest in qualifying was John Fitzpatrick , who achieved a time of 1: 55.420 minutes in the Gelo Racing Porsche 935 / 77A. While the training took place in dry driving conditions, it rained on race day. On the wet track, the number 11 Porsche, which started from pole position , led for a long time. When the car fell behind after a repair stop, Fitzpatrick switched to Hezemans and Hans Heyer to the number 12 car, which was one lap ahead of the race on the Konrad Porsche won.
