Misano 6-hour race in 1978

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 6-hour race of Misano 1978 , also called Misano 6 Hours , took place on June 25th at the Autodromo di Santamonica and was the ninth round of the sports car world championship of that year.

The race

The overall victory of Bob Wollek and Henri Pescarolo in Misano was unspectacular and safe. The competition decimated itself through technical inadequacies and errors. The Porsche 935s from Gelo Racing were particularly hard hit . With car number 8, the mechanics miscalculated the amount of fuel, so that John Fitzpatrick rolled out with an empty tank one lap before the pit stop planned for refueling. The Porsche with Toine Hezemans at the wheel was stopped by the race management with the black flag after the car lost a lot of oil.

The best-placed BMW 320i also retired. After an engine failure, Markus Höttinger's car spun on the leaking oil from the track. Due to the many failures, the two Italians Vittorio Coggiola and Piero Monticone achieved second place overall in a privately registered Porsche 935, four laps behind the winners.
