Vallelunga 6-hour race in 1978

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 6-hour race of Vallelunga 1978 , also 6 Ore di Vallelunga, Vallelunga , took place on September 3rd at the Autodromo Vallelunga and was the twelfth round of the sports car world championship of that year.

The race

The racetrack in Campagnano di Roma was considered badly maintained and neglected in the 1970s. The asphalt was wavy and always dusty. With no run-off zones , the asphalt section went directly into uncut meadows. The factory team of Porsche just reported a vehicle to race after the German sports car manufacturer after only seven wins this season as the winner of the brands World Cup it was clear. Jacky Ickx and Manfred Schurti drove this factory 935/78 . After a superior pole position and a clear lead in the race, he retired shortly before the end of the race with a defective fuel pump. The overall victory for the Porsche brand was never in jeopardy in this race either. The best BMW 320i , driven by Marc Surer and Freddy Kottulinsky , was six laps behind the victorious Kremer -935 driven by Henri Pescarolo and Bob Wollek in the final classification and finished fourth.
