Career

Manfred Schurti is still the most famous and most successful racing driver in the Principality of Liechtenstein. He was born in Austria on Christmas Eve 1941, in the middle of World War II, and began his career in Formula Vee in the late 1960s . In 1970 a world championship was held for this racing formula, which Schurti won. In 1972 he won the overall classification of the Formula Super Vau Castrol Trophy and the International Castrol GTX Trophy . In the same year he was elected Sportsman of the Year in Liechtenstein. Entering and switching to Formula 2 was not very successful - there were only four starts from 1973 to 1976 - so that Schurti turned to touring and sports car racing from 1976 . He drove in the German racing championship and in the sports car world championship . In the German racing championship, he won a total of three races. In 1980 he drove in the Procar series , where he was once victorious.

Schurti competed nine times in the Le Mans 24-hour race ; with the best result in 1976 when he and Rolf Stommelen finished fourth in the overall ranking. The Liechtensteiner also wrote motorsport history at Le Mans. In 1975 he was part of the only five-man team that made it into the final ranking. Together with Gijs van Lennep , Toine Hezemans , John Fitzpatrick and Georg Loos he finished fifth.
