Forchtenau Castle

Forchtenau Castle: Former Meierhof, called Zwoamühl

The former Forchtenau Castle was located in the municipality of Aurolzmünster in the Ried im Innkreis district in Upper Austria .

The Aygling seat, first mentioned in 1150, was located on the site of the abandoned Forchtenau Castle. This building was abandoned at the beginning of the 15th century and the then fiefdom owner Georg Ahaimer zum Newnhauws received on March 19, 1404, permission from Duke Heinrich of Bavaria to pawn the purkstal zu Ayling , d. H. rebuild. In 1417 the Tannbergers are named as owners, whereby the name Vorichtenaw is now in use for the place . It is not known when the seat was demolished and a castle built. In 1514 Moritz von Tannberg named Vorichtenaw as the location of his castle. In 1676, Count Ferdinand Franz Albrecht acquired it by choice. In 1750 the castle was demolished; it is unclear whether a fire was the reason for the demolition.

At the current location of the castle, only the former Meierhof remains, popularly known as the Zwoamühle, as a mill was set up here at times. An extensive park stretched between Forchtenau Castle and Aurolzmünster Castle, about a kilometer away .

The legend of the devil of Forchtenau surrounds the former castle.
