Career

Dick Barbour grew up in La Jolla near San Diego and took an early interest in motor racing. Therefore, he founded a car accessories business and a repair and tuning workshop for Porsche vehicles. At the same time, he got into automobile racing.

Barbour contested his first races in 1968 with a Lola T70 Mk II Spyder in a few races in the Can-Am . In 1969 he switched to a Porsche 904 and drove this year and the following in non-championship races organized by the SCCA. With the 1971 season he started in two Can-Am races with a Porsche 908/02 Spyder before interrupting his racing career for a few years.

From 1977 Barbour drove again and started together with Tony Adamowicz and John Cannon in a Ferrari 365 GTB / 4 Competizione his first endurance race at the 24-hour race of Daytona that they had to end prematurely. With a Porsche 934/5 he started in the GTO class of the IMSA GT Championship and achieved several top ten placements.

For the 1978 and 1979 racing seasons, he acquired a Porsche 935 / 77A , with which he competed in the IMSA GT Championship, the FIA Endurance Championship and the World Sports Car Championship. At the 1978 Daytona 24-hour race , he and Manfred Schurti and Johnny Rutherford finished second in the overall standings. The 24-hour race at Le Mans he finished, Brian Redman and John Paul with fifth place and the IMSA class win. A year later he and his team were able to repeat last year's success at Le Mans with a second overall place and the IMSA class win. Barbour achieved his greatest success as a racing driver in 1980 with overall victories in the three endurance races at Sebring , Riverside and Mosport with a Porsche 935 K3 / 80.

He drove his last race in the 1980 Road America 500-mile IMSA GT Championship, which he finished in second place.

In 2000 he got back into motorsport with his racing team Dick Barbour Racing . In the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), Dirk Müller in a Porsche 911 GT3 R (Type 996 ) secured the GT class victory in the driver, team and manufacturer championship with nine wins in twelve races. A year later, the racing team fielded Reynard 01Q racing cars in the ALMS LMP 675 class and won the team classification and, with Didier de Radiguès , the drivers' championship.

In 2004 Barbour became a partner of the Lamborghini Murciélago manufacturer team in the USA. The Lamborghini Murciélago R-GT used by Krohn-Barbour Racing was not successful in the ALMS and so Barbour got out after just one season.

It was not until 2008 that Barbour returned to motorsport. With his partner David Robertson, he drives Ford GT racing cars in the ALMS. At the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2011 , the Robertson Racing LLC team started with a Ford GT-R Mk VII in the LMGTE Am class and came in 26th overall and third in the class classification.
