Hockenheim 6 hour race in 1977
The 6-hour race at Hockenheim in 1977 , also Int. ADAC racing final, Hockenheim , took place on October 9th at the Hockenheimring and was the 16th round of the sports car world championship of this year.
The race
In the mid-1970s, the operators of the Hockenheimring at the time tried to establish a second German sports car world championship run on the Palatinate race track alongside the traditional long-distance race on the Nürburgring's Nordschleife . After Formula 1 switched to the Hockenheimring after Niki Lauda's serious accident at the 1976 German Grand Prix , the officials hoped to get the 1000 km race on their track. However, this endeavor came at an inopportune time for professionals. In 1977, the sports car races had long since lost their importance compared to the single-seater formula. 100,000 spectators and more at the events have long been a thing of the past. In addition, due to the large starting fields, the effort for the respective organizers was at least as great as in the Formula 1 races. Poor utilization therefore inevitably led to a considerable financial loss, which promptly occurred in Hockenheim.
In order to stand out from the other 1000 km races, the officials decided to hold the race in two races of 3 hours each. This solution was not well received by spectators and journalists, because in the second run they soon lost track of the added race ranking. The race itself was won by Bob Wollek and John Fitzpatrick in a Porsche 935 from Kremer Racing , which won the first race. The particular absurdity of this racing format was evident in the factory Porsche 935 owned by Jacky Ickx and Manfred Schurti . The car was parked in the pits on the 72nd lap of the first run due to an overheated cylinder. At this point the Porsche was in the lead. Usually the car had therefore failed. To the surprise of the audience, the duo started the second run with the engine cool and clearly won it. However, the car did not make it into the overall standings.
