Pergusa 500 km race in 1977
The 500 km race of Pergusa 1977 , also Coppa Florio, Pergusa , took place on June 19 at the Autodromo di Pergusa and was the eighth round of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
The Coppa Florio was one of the oldest road races in motorsport history . The event, which first took place in 1900, was named in 1905 after Vincenzo Florio , the founder of the Targa Florio . Florio donated 50,000 lire and a challenge cup, after which the race got its name. The first Coppa ended with the victory of Alberto Franchetti in a Panhard & Levassor 12 HP . The last race before World War II took place in 1929 and ended with Albert Divo winning on a Bugatti T35C . Then the race was forgotten.
In 1973 the race was brought back to life and was part of the sports car world championship from 1975 . In 1975 the race distance was 1000 kilometers (winners Arturo Merzario and Jochen Mass in the Alfa Romeo T33 / TT / 12 ), which in 1976 was shortened to 500 kilometers or 4 hours (winners Jochen Mass and Rolf Stommelen in the Porsche 936 ). Also in 1977 the race distance was 500 kilometers.
In training again showed the technical superiority of plant - Alfa Romeo T33 / SC / 12 . The gap between the two works cars of Arturo Merzario and Giorgio Francia / Spartaco Dini was more than three seconds in qualifying for the third-placed Osella PA5 of Eugenio Renna and Luigi Moreschi . After Francia / Dini's Alfa was disqualified at the start due to a rule violation, Arturo Merzario drove a lonely race to victory. After a driving time of just under three hours, he had a lead of three laps over the two Swiss Eugen Strähl and Peter Bernhard in a Sauber C5
