Gerhard Holup started his racing career in 1972 in the German Automobile Circuit Trophy (DARM) in a Porsche 911 . In the following two years he gained further experience in touring car motorsport there and also in various individual GT races and finished some races with second and third place overall. In 1975 he switched to a Porsche 911 Carrera RSR and contested his first long-distance race with Anton Stocks in the sports car world championship at the 1000 km race at the Nürburgring, which both finished in 19th place.

A year later he drove for the Kremer Racing Team with a Porsche 934 in the 1st division of the German Racing Championship (DRM). From 1977 to 1979 he competed in the sports car world championship with the Max Moritz team's Porsche 934. There he was able to achieve 7th place and his first class win in the 1000 km race on the Nürburgring in 1979 together with Jürgen Lässig and Hermann-Peter Duge. He celebrated his first overall victory in the GT race in Zolder for group 3 and 4 racing cars.

In 1980 he moved to the Weralit-Elora-Racing-Team with which he competed in the sports car world championship in a Porsche 935 K3 . In 1981 he celebrated one of his greatest racing successes with victory in the 1000 km race at Monza .

In 1978 Holup competed for the first time in the Le Mans 24-hour race . There he, Edgar Dören , Hervé Poulain and Romain Feitler had to give up the race prematurely due to a gearbox damage on the car. He drove his last race at Le Mans with Edgar Dören and Jürgen Lässig in 1981 in a Porsche 935 K3, which they could not finish after 45 laps with engine failure.

In 1988 he and his driver colleagues Edgar Dören and Peter Faubel achieved a surprise victory in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring when they finished first in a Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 3.0, which is over ten years old.
