Mugello 6-hour race 1979
The 1979 Mugello 6-hour race , also called Campionato Mondo Marche Aut., Mugello , took place on March 18 at the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello . The race was the third round of the sports car world championship this year.
The race
The race in Mugello showed very clearly the decline that the World Sports Car Championship had meanwhile taken. 18 vehicles, including four 2-liter sports cars , entered the race. The superiority of the two Gelo Racing Porsche 935s was disrupted at the beginning by Carlo Facetti in the Jolly Club 935, who took the lead in the rain. After a collision while lapping, he fell behind and finished the race with partner Martino Finotto in third place in the final ranking.
As the rain got heavier, the race management stopped the event after a driving time of 5 hours and 15 minutes. There was a double victory for Georg Loos' team , with Bob Wollek and Manfred Schurti spending racing times in both vehicles. In addition to Wollek and Schurti, the winning team also included John Fitzpatrick . Fitzpatrick repeated his victory from the previous year .
