Willem Geets
Willem Geets (born January 20, 1838 in Mechelen , † January 19, 1919 ibid) was a Belgian history painter and etcher as well as an art teacher .
Willem Geets began his artistic training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Mechelen with Willem de Verschaeren the Elder. From 1858 to 1861 he studied at the Antwerp Academy with Nicaise de Keyser . In 1862 he came to Léon Cogniet's studio in Paris . From 1863 he worked alternately in Antwerp and Mechelen.
He mainly dealt with history painting, also created portraits and templates for tapestries for the Braquénié knitting mill in Mechelen, including eight tapestries for the Brussels City Hall. He illustrated books with etchings, a. a. the novel "Ernest Staes" by Anton Bergmann.
In 1869 he was appointed director of the Mechelen art academy and held the post until 1891.
In 1886 he founded a Guild of St. Luke in Mechelen .
