Spa-Francorchamps 24-hour race 1979

Racing version of the Triumph Dolomite

The 31st Spa-Francorchamps 24-hour race , also known as 24 Heures de Francorchamps , took place on the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps from July 21 to 22, 1979 and was the 13th round of the sports car world championship of that year.

The race

In the 1970s, the number of international racing events at the Spa racetrack continued to decline, as the lack of safety for drivers and spectators was increasingly criticized. After the Belgian Grand Prix in 1970 , Formula 1 withdrew. The races of the sports car world champions - and the European touring car championship remained . After the criticism within these racing series had increased, the organizer decided in autumn 1978 to rebuild the track for the first time. The route was shortened to about half. The new section of the route branched off after the Kemmel straight, led downhill and ended at the Stavelot curve in the existing road. This conversion increased safety and still partially preserved the original character of the street course. The route length after the renovation was 6.947 kilometers.

There was bad weather on the race weekend. In addition to the rain showers that kept coming, there was fog in the night. The result was a mass collision that resulted in a 90-minute safety car phase . A Triumph Dolomite collided with a Ford Capri . As a result, other vehicles that could not avoid the wrecks had accidents. Former Formula 1 driver Jean-Pierre Beltoise , who was in the lead, had the most spectacular accident in his BMW 530i . The BMW came to rest on the roof of another vehicle after it rolled over. Shortly after Beltoise was able to free herself from the broken car, it went up in flames. Beltoise was just as uninjured as the other drivers involved.

For a long time, two BMW 530i were in the lead, before Jean-Claude Andruet / Eddy Joosen's car and then Bruno Giacomelli's / Umberto Grano / Dirk Vermeersch's car had to go to the pits for lengthy repairs. As a result, Jean-Michel Martin / Philippe Martin won a Ford Capri III 3.0 S reported by Gordon Spice .
