1979 Silverstone 6 hour race
The 1979 Silverstone 6-hour race , also known as the Rivet Supply World Manufacturers Championship 6 Hours, Silverstone , took place on May 6th at the Silverstone Circuit and was the seventh round of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
The approaching 24 Hours of Le Mans gave the Manufacturers' World Championship run in Silverstone the best field of the season to date. Porsche originally wanted to report the Porsche 935/78 - Moby-Dick , with which Jochen Mass and Jacky Ickx had won the 6-hour race last year . However, the team management decided to use the Porsche 936/78 in preparation for Le Mans . Jochen Mass's partner this time was Brian Redman . Chris Craft and Gordon Spice drove the Dome Zero RL, with V8 - Cosworth -Motor. Alain de Cadenet reported his De-Cadenet-Lola. The car was based on a Lola chassis and made its racing debut. De Cadenet's team partner was François Migault , who drove in the Formula 1 World Championship in the mid-1970s . Among other things, he started for BRM and Embassy Hill . Robin Hamilton brought his Aston Martin DBS V8 RHAM1 to the track, whose 5.3 liter V8 engine was fitted with a new petrol injection. The improved injection system should limit the previously enormous gasoline consumption that was triggered by the turbocharger . The consumption of 120 liters per 100 kilometers driven was unsatisfactory for a long-distance race - sports car . Although fuel consumption could be reduced, it was only enough for 12th place overall in the race, one position behind the dome , with a clear gap to the winners . Drivers were Derek Bell and David Preece .
A message from the hit just before closing date yet from Italy Lancia - works team one. The Lancia Beta Monte Carlo Turbo of Riccardo Patrese and Walter Röhrl , however, was ill-prepared and maintained. After filling in the coolant, the mechanics forgot to close the radiator . In the race, the engine ran hot after driving 10 minutes after all of the fluid had run out. The result was a defective cylinder head gasket that forced the team to give up.
The fastest driver in qualifying was Jochen Moss in the Porsche 936. With a time of 1: 20.310 minutes for one lap, he was four seconds faster than John Fitzpatrick in the Gelo- Porsche 935 . The race was dominated by Mass and Redman until the Porsche had braking problems. This led to the failure of the car due to an accident in the last racing district. John Fitzpatrick won the race together with Hans Heyer and Bob Wollek , ahead of the surprisingly competitive Lola von de Cadenet and Migault.
