Riverside 6 Hours 1979
The 1979 Riverside 6-Hour Race , also known as the Los Angeles Times Grand Prix of Endurance, Riverside International Speedway , took place on April 22nd at Riverside International Raceway . The race was the sixth round of the sports car world championship this year.
The race
The event in Riverside was very different from the races of the World Challenge for endurance riders in Talladega and Daytona . Since the race was also part of the IMSA GT series , the starting field was larger and far more prominent. The races of the Brands World Championship did not reach a similarly high number of participants.
It was a race of the Porsche 935 , which took the first six places in the overall classification. The best non-Porsche was behind two Carrera and another 935 the Datsun 280ZX from Don Devendorf and Tony Adamowicz in tenth place in the overall standings. Overall winners were Don and Bill Whittington with a lead of 1 minute and 30 seconds on John Paul junior and Al Holbert .
