Peter Gregg
Peter Holden Gregg (born May 4, 1940 in New York City , † December 15, 1980 in Ponte Vedra Beach ) was an American racing driver .
Career
Peter Gregg was the son of a marine engineer and studied English at Harvard University in the 1950s . Like his father, he went to the United States Navy and was stationed in Jacksonville as an intelligence officer.
Gregg had already competed as an amateur car racing driver while he was in the navy and began a professional racing career in 1965 after he left the Navy. In the 1960s he also built up a middle-class existence as a car dealer. He represented the brands Porsche , Mercedes-Benz , Fiat and MG . Together with his friend Hurley Haywood , with whom he achieved most of his sports car successes, he covered Florida with a profitable dealer network.
In the mid-1960s, he achieved his first successes in racing. In 1967 he secured the overall ranking of the SCCA Southeastern Division, a sports car racing series, in two classes. Other titles followed in the Trans-Am series (1973 and 1974) and the IMSA GTO championship (1971 and 1973). After his first triumph at the 1973 24-hour race in Daytona , together with Haywood in the Porsche 911 Carrera , he surprisingly retired from racing to take a job as a bank manager in Jacksonville. Peter Gregg stayed away from motorsport for only a year and returned to the racetracks in 1975.
The following years made him one of the most successful drivers in US sports car races. Four more times he won the overall ranking of the GTO class of the IMSA GTP series . He was victorious in the Daytona 24-hour race three more times, in 1975, 1976 and 1978. Only at the 24 Hours of Le Mans did he fail to achieve great success. Twice - he made his debut there in 1966 - he finished third overall on the podium of the top three. In 1980 he had an accident on the way to the racetrack at Le Mans and suffered minor head injuries.
On December 15, 1980, a few days after his wedding to Deborah Gregg , née Mars, Peter Gregg committed suicide. The reason for this act could never be fully clarified. One possible cause is said to have been the consequences of the road accident at Le Mans.
