1000 km race from Zeltweg 1972
The fourth 1000 km race in Zeltweg , also the 1000 km Österreichring, Zeltweg , took place on June 25, 1972 and was the tenth round of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
After the end of the 5-liter displacement engine formula in sports car racing at the end of 1971, two important competitors, the Porsche 917 and the Ferrari 512S, disappeared from the international racing tracks. In 1972 the championship was extended to vehicles with a displacement of up to 3 liters. The most important participants were Ferrari with the Ferrari 312PB and Alfa Romeo with the Tipo 33 . To the regret of the organizer, however, Autodelta withdrew the naming of three works cars and did not show up for training and races.
Ferrari remained almost without opponents in the class up to 3-liter displacement with four works cars. Only Gulf Research Racing competed with a Mirage M6 , which was driven by Gijs van Lennep and Derek Bell . There was also a Porsche 911 equipped with a 2.7-liter engine . The remaining participants are divided between the class up to 2-liter displacement and the GT vehicles.
The unemployed Alfa Romeo factory drivers tried to find accommodation with other teams. Vic Elford drove a Lola T280 from Ecurie Bonnier and Helmut Marko stepped in for Clay Regazzoni at Ferrari at short notice . The Swiss broke his hand while playing football during a break in training. The race ended with a quadruple victory for the works Ferrari, led by cars with the starting number 1, driven by Jacky Ickx and Brian Redman .
