The 29th RAC Tourist Trophy also, 29th RAC International Tourist Trophy Race including Senior Service Trophy, Goodwood , took place on August 29, 1964 at the Goodwood Circuit and was the 13th round of the World Sports Car Championship of that year.

The race

As in previous years, the RAC Tourist Trophy was held on the Goodwood race track in 1964. The track on the grounds of Goodwood House , near Chichester in the south of England , was considered fast and dangerous for large sports and monoposto racing cars in the mid-1960s . Stirling Moss had a serious accident at Goodwood in April 1962, which ended his career.

The race had a very busy entry list. Maranello Concessionaires , the racing team of the British Ferrari importer Ronny Hoare , came with two vehicles. Innes Ireland received a Ferrari 250 GTO / 64 . Graham Hill was entrusted with a 330P , a mid-engined sports car with a 4-liter V12 unit . Other GTO's were driven by Richie Ginther and Tony Maggs . David Piper , who also reported Maggs' GTO, drove a Ferrari 250LM himself . Tough opposition for the Ferraris was expected from five Cobras. Two were owned by John Willment , a Shelby Cobra Roadster for Jack Sears and a Coupe for Bob Olthoff . Carroll Shelby's Daytona Coupes were driven by Dan Gurney and Phil Hill . Another AC Cobra was in the hands of Roy Salvadori . Bruce McLaren was at the wheel of a Zerex Special , a US sports car built on the chassis of a Cooper T53 Monoposto with a 3.5 liter Oldsmobile V8 engine.

McLaren led the first laps after the start in what he called Cooper Oldsmobile , ahead of Jim Clark in a Lotus 30 and Denis Hulme , who drove a Brabham BT8 . When McLaren retired after 18 laps due to a damaged clutch, Clark took the lead in front of Hulme and Trevor Taylor in the Elva Mk. 7 S. Graham Hill had spun on lap 17th with his 330P and dropped back to the bottom of the field. Place by place he fought his way back to the top and was in second place behind Clark before the start of the refueling stops. The race was decided by the stops. Clark was refilled with too little gas, so that he had to pit for another stop. Despite his daring driving style, Clark was unable to make up for the deficit, falling hopelessly behind after a ride and a subsequent stop. Hill won the race; it was the first overall win for the 330P. David Piper in the 250LM was second, one lap behind, ahead of Dan Gurney, who was third in the fastest Cobra.
