The 1964 Monza Grand Prix , also known as the GP GT di Monza , took place on May 3 at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza and was the fourth round of the sports car world championship of that year.

The race

The Monza Grand Prix was announced in 1964 for GT cars and was a 3-hour race without driver changes (with one exception). Before the race, there was a dispute between some Abarth private drivers and the organizer. They complained about what they saw as the preferred treatment of the three works cars. Abarth had adapted and technically improved the factory Abarth-Simca 1300 Bialbero . Improvements that the private drivers did not have. Since the improvements took place within the framework of the regulations, the protests of private drivers were rejected. As a result, seven Abarth drivers decided not to start.

Unsurprisingly, the race ended with a triple victory for the works cars. Franco Patria was one lap ahead of his teammates Hans Herrmann and Tommy Spychiger at the finish .
