The race
With the start of the sports car world championship, the RAC Tourist Trophy was added to the racing calendar in 1953. Organized by the Royal Automobile Club , the race was one of the oldest racing events in Britain. In 1905 the Trophy was first held on the Highroads Course on the Isle of Man and ended with a victory for John Napier on an Arrol-Johnston .
The race was also part of the world championship in 1962 and was driven out in GT-class vehicles . Driver changes were not originally planned, but some teams started with two drivers per racing car. The event was won by Innes Ireland on a Ferrari 250 GTO registered by the British Racing Partnership . Ferrari 250 GTOs also crossed the finish line in second and third; driven by Graham Hill and Mike Parkes .
