Bernardus Marinus "Ben" Pon junior (born December 9, 1936 in Leiden , grew up in Amersfoort , † September 30, 2019 ) was a Dutch businessman , former automobile racing driver and Olympic competitor in clay pigeon shooting .
Career
Pon is a son of the Dutch car dealer Ben Pon senior , who introduced the Volkswagen to the USA in 1949 and invented the VW minibus . The young Pon began racing on the Zandvoort circuit in the 1950s - initially in a VW Beetle with a Porsche Carrera engine.
Between 1961 (debut at the Nürburgring ) and 1967 he drove races for Porsche and took part in the Le Mans 24-hour race six times . In the automobile world championship Pon was not successful: In his first and only start (also with a Porsche) in 1962 at the Grand Prix of the Netherlands for the private team Écurie Maarsbergen he had an accident in the second lap. His car was carried out of the Scheivlak curve and overturned several times. Pon was thrown from the vehicle, but remained almost uninjured. However, he vowed never to race in a single-seater again.
Pon continued to work for Porsche and helped build the Racing Team Holland and the Dutch Racing Team , both of which were very successful. In 1968 Pon drove his last two races in the World Sportscar Championship in a Porsche 910 .
As an athlete, Ben Pon was seen again at the Olympic Games : In Munich he competed in clay pigeon shooting for the Netherlands, but only finished 31st with 187 hits.
He had also taken over his father's company; In 1980 he founded Pon Holdings , a Dutch group of companies, among other things in the field of trade and rental of vehicles. Your seat is Almere . At the beginning of 2009 it had around 11,000 employees.
By 1981, Pon was one of four directors of Pon Holdings . In 1992 he founded his own winery, in 1997 he bought Danny McCallum Safaris , a safari company from Tanzania . In Carmel Valley ( California , USA ) he had the Bernardus Lodge built, a luxury hotel that opened in 1999. Pon was the owner of the Bernardus Winery in Carmel and lived alternately there, in Amersfoort and in Somerset ( England ).
