Spa-Francorchamps 500 km race in 1963

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 500 km race of Spa-Francorchamps 1963 , also Grand Prix Spa 500 Kilometres, Spa-Francorchamps , took place on May 12th at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps and was the fifth round of the sports car world championship of that year.

The race

With the 500 km race, a second endurance race was established on the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. Since 1924 was at the circuit in the Ardennes , the Spa 24 Hours extended, the 1953 and the World Cup sports cars counted.

In the 500 km race, only GT vehicles were allowed to start. The race developed into a duel between the two Belgians Willy Mairesse and Pierre Noblet , who both competed with Ferrari 250 GTOs . After almost three hours of driving, Mairesse had a 32-second lead over Noblet at the finish.
