action

Kaleche wakes up in the wild without being able to remember how she got there. After wandering around for some time, she meets the Kati Kati holiday complex and its residents. The group, led by the young Thoma , welcomes her and tells her that she is dead. Kaleche, dismayed, tries to flee, but is unable to leave Kati Kati. Kaleche fits into the group quickly and easily gets used to a fun-filled afterlife together.

However, Kaleche soon notices that every resident of the facility is lagging behind with something from their previous life. Mikey , who died shortly before graduating from school and is a passionate basketball player, tries in vain to commit suicide again. It burdens him heavily to have left his mother behind. Only when he succeeds in letting go and finally accepting his death does he leave Kati Kati and his existence changes into a different state. Curious what this is all about, Kaleche asks the otherwise silent King , a former priest who was killed by a vengeful crowd after an election. In the process, she learns that some residents are afflicted by a strange infestation that gradually makes the skin white, cold and lifeless.

When Kaleche finds the first white spots on her body and tells Thoma about it, he confronts King and blames him for it. King died at the revenge of an angry crowd after denying entry to the protective church during an attack on his own community and having them burned in front of the doors. Later that evening, Kaleche sees the King, who has now become completely white, burning his things and then running out into the dark night and leaving Kati Kati.

Kaleche and Thoma have felt more and more drawn to each other since Kaleche's arrival, but the first tender moment comes to an abrupt end. In a subsequent group round, Kaleche learns that she was married to Thoma in her previous life, which he kept from her in Kati Kati. Thoma admits to having both killed in a car accident under the influence of alcohol. The confession of their leader shocks the residents of Kati Kati and they suspect Thoma of being the reason for their imprisonment. A tumult breaks out and while Thoma is dragged through the property by the angry crowd, he accepts his fate and begins to make his peace with it. Kaleche fights his way to Thoma, who is lying on the ground, and takes him protectively in her arms. She forgives him and Thoma goes peacefully into another existence.

background

The joint initiative of Tom Tykwers and Marie Steinmanns One Fine Day Films, DW Akademie and the Kenyan production company Ginger Ink has set itself the goal of supporting the development of modern African film. To this end, they founded One Fine Day Film Workshops . After the success of Nairobi Half Life , which was the first Kenyan film to participate in the Oscars , KATI KATI is another film from the workshops, this time directed by Mbithi Masya, who participated in one of the film workshops in 2010. In addition to cameraman Andrew 'Dru' Mungai , a large part of the KATI KATI team received further training in the one-fine-day film workshops.

One Fine Day Films also developed the first African "Film Music & Composing Workshop" on behalf of the Göhde Foundation, which is recognized as a non-profit, which was held in Nairobi at the end of November / beginning of December 2015 and from which the music of KATI KATI emerged . The Kenyan composers Sean Peevers and Ibrahim Sidede, who were selected as mentors from the workshop of the well-known film music composer Ali N. Askin, who was awarded the German Film Prize in 2008 , were then invited to Cologne in March 2016 to perform their film music together with "the young orchestra NRW" (djoNRW) under the direction of Ingo Ernst Reihl in the Parkhausstudio Cologne. Further film music for "KATI KATI" comes from "Just a Band", a music group in which director Mbithi Masya is also active, as well as from the Kenyan singer Mayonde.
