occupation

Nairobi Half Life is the debut film by Kenyan director David “Tosh” Gitonga. It was created under the supervision of the German director and film producer Tom Tykwer in the middle of Nairobi , Kenya .

action

Nairobi Half Life tells the story of a young, ambitious actor who, in spite of all his anger, makes his way to Nairobi in order to realize his dream of one day to be a successful actor. However, he quickly gets into the criminal circles of the city and realizes the challenge of reconciling both worlds, the sheer survival in the city and his acting dream. His ambition shows us that the only thing that stands between us and our dreams is ourselves.

background

The film was made in 2011 from a workshop in Nairobi. The joint initiative of Tom Tykwers and Marie Steinmanns One Fine Day Films , DW Akademie and the Kenyan production company Ginger Ink. Has set itself the goal of supporting the development of modern African film.

Seven mentors from Germany and Great Britain taught for two weeks in the areas of direction, production, camera, production design, editing, sound design, screenplay and acting. Over 60 participants from nine African countries had the opportunity to expand and deepen their existing knowledge at the workshop. The focus was on the artistic aspect of developing your own film language and implementing your own ideas.

At the end of the seminar, certain participants were selected from the individual trades that produced Nairobi Half Life. The script, written in Swahili , Kikuyu and street slang, was developed by local screenwriters.

The “One Fine Day Films” workshop was funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW , the Goethe-Institut Kenya and ARRI Film & TV Services.

criticism

Nairobi Half Life is - probably not least thanks to the participation of the German director Tom Tykwer as producer - a true-to-life story of the black continent that is also interesting for Western viewing habits. One is surprised how unattractive and faceless the Kenyan capital is. But the film and its story ultimately benefit from the fact that it does not provide colorful folkloric images from Africa, but rather soberly tells the fate of young Mwas, who does not allow himself to be discouraged by all the severe setbacks and admirably pursues his goal. The fact that one learns a lot about the living conditions in Kenya - unobtrusively - is a pleasant side effect. "
