The Innsbruck International Film Festival ( IFFI for short ) has been held annually since 1992. It began in 1992 in the course of the “500th anniversary of the discovery of America” as the “America Film Festival”, which mainly meant the South American part of the double continent. This led to the development of “CineVision” (1996–1998), which opened up to the cinema of the countries of the south. With the expansion of the arthouse cinema “ Cinematograph ” in Museumstrasse to include the restored and much larger Leo cinema, three halls were now available from 1999 and expanded the earlier mini-festivals into the international film festival.

The film festival's traditional focus is on films from and about Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe. Awards include the Film Prize of the State of Tyrol, the Prize of the State Capital Innsbruck, the Prize of the University of Innsbruck and the Südwind Film Prize as well as an audience award. The president of the festival is Hans Kohl , founder and festival director Helmut Groschup .

On the occasion of the 20th edition of the festival, the text collection IFFI ZWANZIG was published. Poetics of pointing .
