Jean-Marie Teno

Jean-Marie Teno (born May 14, 1954 in Famleng, Bandjoun in Ouest ) is a Cameroonian filmmaker and video artist .

life and work

Jean-Marie Teno completed his school education in Yaoundé and then studied communication sciences at the University of Valenciennes in northern France. He has lived in France since 1978, but returns to Cameroon every year. Jean-Marie Teno worked as a film critic for Bwana magazine . From 1985 to 1997 he worked as a film editor at FR3 . Teno has been directing since 1983. He is co-owner of the production company "Les Films du Raphia"

“The focus of filmmaker Jean-Marie Teno's work is the legacy of post-colonialism in African societies, especially in his home country of Cameroon. In both his feature films and documentaries, he aims to expose the problems associated with this legacy in Africa. (...) Teno's concern is to use the potential of video film to strengthen media production in Africa. Due to the low production costs and simple production conditions, videos make it possible to develop personal stories that are clearly also political. In addition, they can be made accessible to the local audience through privately organized demonstrations. "
