Ephraim and the Lamb (original title: Lamb ) is a 2015 film by the Ethiopian director Yared Zeleke . It premiered in the Un Certain Regard section during the 2015 Cannes International Film Festival . The German theatrical release was on November 26, 2015. The film was submitted as an Ethiopian entry for the Oscar for best foreign language film .

The mother of nine-year-old Ephraïms has died. His father wants to leave his home village of Buya in northern Ethiopia and look for work in Addis Ababa . So they drive together to see cousin Solomon, where the father wants to house his son. Ephraïm is allowed to take his sheep Chuni with him.
Ephraïm wants to help cook in his new family. Solomon finds that unmanly. He'd rather show him plowing with the oxen. Ephraïm is so clumsy that Solomon sends him off the field. He is supposed to prove his manhood by slaughtering his sheep for the religious festival the following Friday. Ephraïm wants to avoid that by all means and he has already found out that the bus ride back to Buya costs 120 birr for him and his sheep. He wants to earn it by selling deep-fried dumplings on the market.
A high mountain looms near Solomon's farm. Ephraïm mounts it with the lamb to be able to see his hometown from there. During the descent he is placed on a horse by an armed guard. He wants to take the lamb from Ephraïm. Since Ephraïm points out to him that he is related to Solomon's mother, the guard lets him go.
Two days before Friday, however, there are still 86 birr missing, among other things because the village boys beat him up in the market and took away his earnings. That is why Ephraïm gives his sheep to a sheep dealer for two birr a day and claims it was stolen. For this Solomon beats him.
The mother of the young woman named Tsion, who lives in Solomon's family, has also died. Tsion reads a lot in newspapers and is therefore criticized by Solomon and his wife. She read about climate change in her newspapers. In Ethiopia it rains less and later; therefore the harvests are poor and the rural population goes hungry. Azeb's toddler is also doing badly. Emama sacrifices a piece of jewelry that she wore on her headscarf every day so that they can pay a doctor. But he says that the child must be better fed.
When Ephraïm was selling his dumplings in the market, he saw the sheep dealer beating Chuni. He intervenes, but cannot do anything. Only when Tsion's friend - a truck driver - arrives, does the sheep dealer leave. Tsion goes to Addis Ababa with her boyfriend. Ephraïm secretly gets on the truck with his sheep and wants to go with them. Because Chuni cannot be quiet, they are discovered and scared away.
Ephraïm then brings his sheep into the flock of a young shepherdess.
One day Azeb surprises young Ephraïm while he is counting his takings from the market. She takes the money from him and gives it to her mother-in-law Emama. Ephraïm climbs the mountain a second time. There he falls asleep and dreams of his parents. When he wakes up, it starts to get dark and he has to walk through the forbidden forest. He is at the end of his tether. The guard delivers the boy to his family.
Emama instructs Ephraïm to buy vegetables and chicken at the market, thereby proving that he is honest. Ephraïm does. He cooks for the family and the neighbors. All are full of praise.
