action

The action is set in the United States in the mid to late 1980s. David Meyers has just completed his sophomore year at New York University and has to decide on a major for the coming year. His father, a self-employed accountant , wants David to study accounting too so that he can later join the family business. However, David is not sure whether this field suits him and would therefore like to take a little more time with the decision. In the summer of 1985, he accepted a job as a substitute tennis instructor at the posh Red Oaks Country Club in Bergen County . His girlfriend Karen also work there as a fitness trainer and his childhood friend Wheeler as a valet .

David has earned a good reputation as a tennis instructor and coaches club president Doug Getty, among others. He also works as a cameraman for the photographer Barry. This hitched David's girlfriend, who in turn entered into a relationship with Getty's daughter Skye. Wheeler has his eye on the lifeguard Misty and befriends her. After his promotion to the club's bartender, the two slowly grow closer. In addition to his work in the club, Wheeler is tutoring the children of rich club members so that they pass the SAT test . Meanwhile, David plans to follow his girlfriend Skye to New York City because he wants to study film at NYU.

After the rejection by the NYU and the end of the relationship with Skye, David takes a job as a production assistant at a video production company in New York. Meanwhile, Wheeler has started a teacher training course and his girlfriend Misty has completed her training as a dental hygienist. Red Oaks is sold, despite President Getty fighting it after his parole. But thanks to his black money accounts, Getty has no more financial worries and David is getting closer to his dream of working as a director.

reception

The pilot and the series received mostly good, but rarely enthusiastic reviews . Variety called the series "easy to digest". In particular, Ennis Esmer was praised for his part as a bizarre but loving tennis teacher with an urge to get up. The portrayal of the 1980s was described as "authentic". However, The Wrap's Mark Peikert complained about the lack of arcade closures and stereotypical characters. The third and final season was described by IndieWire as a "leisurely ending" of the story that was actually told to the end, the finale was not a bang, but it was conclusive. On the occasion of the third season, The Daily Dot sums up that the focus on male whites definitely cost viewers the series, although the relationships between characters of different skin color were carefully worked out and presented avoiding stereotypes. The reviewer qualifies the series as "nostalgic and undervalued comedy", which, with its portrayal of the 1980s, arouses longing for a time when many things seemed simpler.
