Kurt Burger
Kurt Burger (born August 3, 1927 in Bausnitz im Riesengebirge , † October 5, 2008 ) was a German mining expert and geologist (coal petrology).
Burger went to school in Schatzlar and trained as a mountain surveying technician in the hard coal mines there . During the Second World War he was briefly a soldier, a prisoner of war and came as a displaced person to the Ruhr area , where he carried out an inventory of the camps as a geologist in the Consolidation colliery of the Mannesmannröhrenwerke in Gelsenkirchen-Schalke in 1947. From 1949 to 1952 he studied at the Bergschule in Bochum with a degree in engineering and surveying. When it was incorporated into Ruhrkohle AG , he became a surveyor and head of geology in 1969. In 1987 he retired.
Around 140 publications come from him. He became known through the elucidation of the stratigraphy of the claystones stored concordantly with the coal seams in the Ruhr area, whereby volcanic mineral inclusions in particular allowed dating and stratigraphic parallelizations.
In 1978 he received an honorary doctorate from the Ruhr University in Bochum and in 2002 he received an honorary doctorate from the German Geological Society at its annual conference in Würzburg. Worldwide distribution maps of claystones from the Devonian to the Tertiary are also from Burger.
In 2002 he received the R. & M. Teichmüller Prize.
