Ulrich Jux
Ulrich Jux (born April 2, 1929 in Hoffnungsthal ; † April 2, 2017 in Bergisch Gladbach ) was a German geologist and paleontologist . Until his retirement he was a professor at the University of Cologne .
education
After graduating from high school, he studied natural sciences with geology as a major at the University of Cologne from March 1950 . In the summer semester of 1952 he was enrolled at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich for the subject of paleontology . From October 1952 to May 1953 he studied at the Fouad University in Cairo . He returned to Cologne for the summer semester of 1953 and in the same year submitted his dissertation on the geology of the chalk area of Abu Roasch near Cairo ( Egypt ) to obtain a doctorate . His doctoral supervisor was Georg Knetsch . Jux had completed the geosciences degree in the record time of eight semesters including a doctorate . He himself said that such a short period of study is no longer possible today because the geosciences have experienced an expansion that has never been known before since 1960. 1958 followed his habilitation thesis under Martin Schwarzbach on the Devonian reefs in the Rhenish Slate Mountains .
Life
From 1954 to 1959 he was a research assistant at the Geological Institute of the University of Cologne. During this time he began geoscientific research into his closer home, namely the Lower Rhine Bay and the Rhenish Slate Mountains . He never stopped doing this research in his whole life.
In 1959, Jux had the opportunity to do a two-year research project at the School of Geoscience at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge , Louisiana, through a grant from the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC . Here he dealt with micropalaeontology , an important science for the petroleum industry . On April 22nd, 1961 he was appointed associate professor and head of the newly founded palaeontological department at the Geological Institute of the University of Cologne. In 1968 he took over a visiting professorship in Afghanistan . After returning to Cologne on May 26, 1972, he was appointed full professor . In the 1980s and 1990s in particular, he undertook several field studies, for example in Nigeria , Egypt and Greece . To this day, however, he has never stopped doing research in the Paffrath Kalkmulde .
Jux was chairman of the Bergisches Geschichtsverein Rhein-Berg eV for many years. Since 2011 he was a widower and lived in Bergisch Gladbach . Jux had a son and a daughter. He died on his 88th birthday and was buried in the Quirlsberg Evangelical Cemetery.
