Georg Knetsch

Georg Wilhelm Richard Knetsch (born February 9, 1904 in Wiesbaden , † June 28, 1997 in Würzburg ) was a German geologist. He was a professor at the University of Würzburg , where he was head of the Geological Institute and in 1960/61 rector.

Life

Knetsch studied from 1923 to 1925 at the University of Marburg and from 1925 to 1927 at the University of Munich , with Emanuel Kayser , Hans Cloos , and Ferdinand Broili , among others . In 1927 he was an assistant at the University of Munich and from 1928 to 1936 as a practical geologist in South Africa, South West Africa (Namibia), Ghana ( Gold Coast ), Sierra Leone. In 1937 he was at the Reichsanstalt für das Deutsche Bäderwesen and in 1938 as a private lecturer at the University of Bonn. From 1939 to 1945 he was a military geologist in Libya, among others . In 1949 he became an adjunct professor at the University of Bonn. From 1951 to 1953 he was director of the geology department at Cairo University and advisor to the Egyptian government on mining and water issues. From 1955 he was a full professor in Würzburg.

In the 1930s and 1940s he also dealt with the geology of arid regions in South West Africa (for example diamond deposits at the Oranje estuary) and in Libya (Marmara Depression). He wrote a book on the geology of Germany .

In 1961 he received the Hans Stille Medal . In 1974 he became an honorary member of the Geological Association. In 1962 he became a member of the Leopoldina .
