The Bergische Historical Society eV ( BGV ) with approximately 4000 members of the largest German regional historical association with the seat of Gesamtverein currently in Wuppertal , also one of the oldest clubs of its kind. It was on 13 June 1863 in Elberfeld (now Wuppertal) founded.
Purpose of the association
The association is dedicated to researching the regional and local history of the Bergisches Land and its neighboring regions, the publication and communication of its research results and the preservation of monuments and dialects .
The BGV consists of an association of 15 legally independent local history associations, which it leads as departments of the entire association. These departments are Burscheid , Erkrath , Haan , Hückeswagen , Niederwupper- Leverkusen (including Monheim, Langenfeld and Leichlingen), Oberberg , Overath , Radevormwald , Cologne on the right bank of the Rhine , Remscheid , Rhein-Berg ( Bergisch Gladbach ), Solingen , Velbert - Hardenberg , Wermelskirchen and Wuppertal .

Co-founders and personalities of the association were among others Karl Wilhelm Bouterwek , Wilhelm Crecelius and Adolf Werth .
The Overath department was added as the 14th department in 1979. In 2017, the history and local history association Rechtsrheinisches Köln was added to the BGV as the 15th department. The number of members of the entire association increased by 330 to 4000.
On September 9, 2018 (Open Monument Day), the Wuppertal office was opened in the Kolkmannhaus .
